Someone, possibly Kabir, said the silver cover version is anamorphic, but perhaps it is the same as the red cover. Anyone know for sure?

These shots from older release, most likely, are not anamorphic. (Screen capture with incorrect settings).

The new release, IS ANAMORPHIC. I have checked it (my recent purchase).

It's very easy to get to exact this shot. Aish's head moves a lot frame to frame. Just match Head to the Widow frame (inner border) and you get exact same frame.

Anamorphic version:
(Time = 09:13 in anamorphic DVD)
The anamorphic version has a bit extra on the sides. Top is very slightly matted. Top of anamorphic version frame cuts off at Ash's nose tip. Bottom is matted less than half of what's matted at top.

Add a little on the sides, cut a little from top and bottom, correct the geometry of the above shot and math will work out to 2.2:1.

Ayngaran have already done an amamorphic transfer of the film in 2.35:1 OAR. This transfer can be seen on a few of thier song DVD titles. However this is done in interpostive and they have no plans to re-do the transfer as Rajiv Menon is not intrested in supervising another transfer of this film after doing it twice for Ayngaran and once for Channel Four.

Rajiv Menon is working on his next untitled Tamil film that is due in 2004.

That shot is 'quote' from Kabir's opening post in this thread. This is the one with incorrect AR.

I described Anamorphic pic in words.
May be, when you get KK DVD you can post exact same shot. It's very easy to get exact same shot. It's at 09:13 in anam version.

Oh No. I'm not saying that. I didn't check/ calculate anam DTS DVD's AR. It does contain a little extra on the sides (and a bit less on top and bottom) as compared to Kabir posted screen caps on p 1 of this thread.

Isn't anamorphic traeatment supposed to improve the PQ??

Then what happened here?? Anamorphic version is Field Averaged and the older Letterboxed version is Film to NTSC telecine (Pseudo-prog).

Any doubts that Field Averaging is a no no??

LOOKs like PARSAD did this WONDERFUL collector EDITION for us!!?

What will u buy, ANAMORPHIC/DTS or CROPPED/DD? Ur choice!!

BTW!! none was DONE BY BEI, so BENEFICIARY is AYANGRAN, both ways!

but one thing is OBVIOUS imho, their DVD QUALITY/AUTHORING is GONE DOWNHILL!!

The anamorphic version is a fuller aspect ratio and appears to have better colors, but is softer than the cropped version. Frustrating!
