Chota Jadugar and Ek Aur Ek Gyarah all had an initial print average of more than 3,50,000.

don't just look at the percentage numbers, take into account the budget of the movie - 55CR! it needs to run at like almost high 80s if not low 90s to recover its cost!..since its not ever going to make that from overseas, it needs to make it all from india - and it isn;t...

I agree!! DOGRA!! Even HERO does decent buisness, still, it is going to fair AVERAGE to ABOVE AVERAGE!!

Some times, they raise ticket price, other times they say budget was 35 crore only, 55 crore was DECLARED to create HYPE! damn it!!

My sentiments exactly. But I will try to watch the entire film when its original crappy Video Sound DVD comes out.

The Hero Box Office: Can It Do It?
By: Abid

It´s all about heroism this week at the box office. Films feared the competition and the promised business after the success of Gadar, with news of a strike looming near, again, it seems much more is laying on The Hero´s shoulders than originally intended. The film not only has Gadar to live up to, but it has to support an ailing industry striving for a hit. After a week full of holidays that raised hopes for Bollywood, The Hero crashed at many places except Delhi-UP and Mumbai city and suburbs. The dispute between producers and distributors has worsened the situation for the exhibitors who are now screening films on a percentage basis. The Hero has yielded excellent shares in Bombay and Delhi-UP but the drop in collections in the other circuits was alarming. Also, the decline in Delhi-U.P. on the last two days of the week was also disturbing, but not as much as the film’s failure in East Punjab. Those exhibitors who had paid fantastic terms would lose heavily. The sole exception being UP. Distributors of most of the territories will loose because of their over enthusiasm. What is surprising is that The Hero has not fared well at small centers including Bihar.

First week reported collections range from:
Bombay 1,33,22,009 from 26 cinemas (13 on FH)

Hyderabad (gross) 38,42,667 from 11 cinemas

Ahmedabad 45,14,879 from 12 cinemas

Anand 7,20,786

Jamnagar 4,99,959 from 2 cinemas

Adipur 2,61,328

Pune 29,34,686 from 9 cinemas

Solapur 4,74,218 from 3 cinemas (1 in matinee)

Delhi 1,08,55,671 from 19 cinemas (4 on FH)

Ghaziabad 5,51,589

Lucknow 10,92,121 from 2 cinemas

Agra 7,15,318

Varanasi 3,72,490

Meerut 5,98,582 from 2 cinemas

Bareilly 3,23,940

Dehradun 3,11,115

Jhansi 2,40,936

Gorakhpur 3,86,000

Modinagar 1,23,146

Calcutta (6 days) 37,37,503 from 18 cinemas

Nagpur 10,52,481 from 5 cinemas

Jabalpur 2,13,756

Amravati 3,29,885

Akola 2,71,314
Raipur (6 days) 2,29,057

Bhilai 1,62,173

Jalgaon 2,57,924

Gondia (29 shows) 82,680

Chandrapur 2,32,269

Indore 5,28,127 from 2 cinemas (1 on FH)

Bhopal 2,12,636 (1 unavailable)

Ujjain approx.1,65,000

Jaipur 11,22,650 from 2 cinemas (1 on FH)

Jodhpur 10,29,868 from 2 cinemas

Bikaner 4,41,953

Davangere 1,65,317

Madras 7,22,349.

Total gross from from 140 theaters across India (About which we are 100%
sure) = Rs 5,36,84,400.

Film
The Hero
Starring
Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra
Released
April 11th, 2003
Summary
The Hero was boosted by as much as four holidays in the first week. Box office collections at many places were excellent during the holidays, but crashed once the holidays were over. Take the case of some centers. In Nagpur, collections on the 6th and 7th day were as low as 25% in some theaters. In Sangli (Maharashtra), the collections on Monday were (34,000/-) and Tuesday (27,000/-) compared to the Sunday’s collection (60,000/-). In spite of the week full of holidays the Katni (C.P. Berar) exhibitor will lose almost 50% of his MG that he paid to Raju Kothari, the distributor of The Hero.

The case of East Punjab is very interesting, exhibitors here, many of whom borrowed money on interest to book The Hero in their cinemas on extraordinary terms (MG´s, FH´s), are facing the prospect of losing 50% of their investments. The collections in East Punjab territory have been so bad that not only will many exhibitors lose about 40-50% of their investments but the film’s distributor too will lose heavily in spite of a fantastic coverage mainly due to the huge MG´s and FH´s received from over-enthusiastic exhibitors. The condition is no different in Rajasthan.

The C.I. distributor of The Hero has turned out to be a smart person, he had acquired the film at a reasonable price unlike his counterparts elsewhere and will be a happy man.
Final Verdict
While the outcome of Delhi-UP and Mumbai City is loud and clear, the movie is a winner here, the beneficiaries being Sunny Deol and the producers Times themselves (who have distributed The Hero in Delhi-UP and Mumbai themselves) the fate of the the other distributors except the CI distributor must be clear from what we have said above. Still we must wait for one more week before we have our final assessment, especially as the distribution price of The Hero is also debatable. Some put it as 3.25 cr /territory and others as 3.75-4 cr /territory.

'The Hero' has been doing well thanks to the fact that there have been no fresh releases following it. But it is still a Herculean task for the producers to recover their investment in a short span. The AMTPP (Association for Motion and Television Programme Producers) has served a notice on Dhirubhai, Pravin and Hasmukh Shah of Time Movies, the producers of 'The Hero', to be present at a meeting on April 24 to consider whether Shahs should be expelled from the association or not and also hear their defense.

B4U labels, HERO, like EVERY ONE ELSE, AVERAGE!

The Hero – Love Story Of A Spy

Not So Heroic

Director : Anil Sharma
Producer : Time
Music: Uttam Singh
Cast: Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra, Amrish Puri, Kabir Bedi
Rating: * * *

By Kavita Awasthi

After Gadar, director Anil Sharma has tasted blood and can do only with big budget films. This time round he once again brings an action packed thriller bashing the Pakistanis big time.

How Khanna fights for his love and exposes the criminals forms the edge-of-the-seat climax.

Anil Sharma's ahs tried his best to give the viewers a mega adventure the scene of the avalanche is a reminder of the same. But then the lacking elements in the story and screenplay and missing emotions of love make Hero a lesser film.

Uttam Singh's music is not up to the standard. Only In Mast Nigahon Mein makes a mark leaving the rest in oblivion.

Sunny Deol as usual perform well which is expected of him as he was born for such roles. He has some good looking get ups in the film and action that speaks for itself. Preity Zinta is just there for fillers in songs and with her not so great role she does well. While the poor Priyanka Chopra has been misused. She looks great but her debut could have been better.

The Hero is a film lavishly produced and has it’s big moments. It’s the small moments which make the film a whole. Without them Hero doesn’t touch your heart. Plus the music is a letdown. So maybe the action lovers will love the film for all it’s worth.

SCREEN calls it SUPERFICIAL:

REVIEW | The Hero

Superficial

Sonia Chopra

orrowing generously from The Saint, Mission Impossible and a dozen Bond films, The Hero tells the story of Arun Kumar, an army intelligence officer, on a mission to destroy Operation Nissan - a game plan by ISI heads to create a nuclear bomb for attaining Kashmir.

Sunny Deol gives an unmotivated performance, choosing to concentrate on the action rather than his expressions. Preity Zinta brings exuberance on the screen with her effortless performance. Priyanka Chopra fails to make a mark with her miniscule role. The cinematography and songs are mediocre.

To it’s credit, the film clearly demarcates between Islamic fundamentalism and the innocent Muslim populace. Even the romance between spy guy and Reshma is sensitively portrayed.

However, the film’s treatment of a problem that has taken innumerable innocent lives and destroyed homes mocks the gravity of the situation. Devoid of any attempt at exploring the complexity of the problem, The Hero turns it into a juvenile drama. And that is unacceptable, even if it is commercial Hindi film.

Now I see what they call flop.

http://headlines.sify.com/2017new....~starry

"---Corporation, with a combined budget of 3.5 million dollars.
K Sera Sera has set a turnover target of 9.5 million dollars from the four movies---"

So, unless you recover 3 times what you spend in making a film, it's a flop.

"Bollywood last year made 132 movies, of which 124 were flops, incurring a total industry loss of Rs 2.90 billion."

This comes to Rs 2,200,000 loss per film. Assuming a film costing Rs 50,000,000 on the average, it's a very small percentage.

It also means, of Rs 50,000,000 they recovered 47,800,000 per film and also 24,000,000 went to Govts for Entertaintasinment Tax. A slight rule change and it'll become a booming industry.

The industry has always wanted for a reduction in taxes. I'm sure that would help them - but why would the gov't. want to hurt itself?

BTW, to clear up the usage vs. numbers issue, this should help:

--

(from rediff.com <http://www.rediff.com/entertai/jul/18grad.htm>)

Superhit: A film that earns much more than double its cost (Technically termed A11)
Hit: Film earns double the cost of the production (AI).
Semi-hit: earns a little less than double (A).
Overflow: Earns its commission and the surplus profits is called overflow which is sent to the producer (B11).
Commission earner: Got its money back (B1).
The rest: Washouts and wimps
--

Now, this system isn't used that strictly in today's times, since overseas has come into play, but it'll give you an idea...:)

I wish we could see the raw gross numbers like we can for Hollywood movies. This hit, superhit, flop business is annoying.

I saw that dogra, ram ram!!

Ek CHOTA SA JADUGAR HERO SE AAGE NIKAL GAYA!!

Anil sharma on hero, :

"One of the factors that has gone against the film is that people are comparing it with GADAR. That can't be helped. Prior to its release, I kept telling everyone not to expect a GADAR this time around. Magar kya kare, meri hi hit film GADAR, meri nayee film HERO ke aade aa gayee.”
