It´s all about heroism this week at the box office. Films feared the competition and the promised business after the success of Gadar, with news of a strike looming near, again, it seems much more is laying on The Hero´s shoulders than originally intended. The film not only has Gadar to live up to, but it has to support an ailing industry striving for a hit. After a week full of holidays that raised hopes for Bollywood, The Hero crashed at many places except Delhi-UP and Mumbai city and suburbs. The dispute between producers and distributors has worsened the situation for the exhibitors who are now screening films on a percentage basis. The Hero has yielded excellent shares in Bombay and Delhi-UP but the drop in collections in the other circuits was alarming. Also, the decline in Delhi-U.P. on the last two days of the week was also disturbing, but not as much as the film’s failure in East Punjab. Those exhibitors who had paid fantastic terms would lose heavily. The sole exception being UP. Distributors of most of the territories will loose because of their over enthusiasm. What is surprising is that The Hero has not fared well at small centers including Bihar.

Film The Hero Starring Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra Released April 11th, 2003 Summary The Hero was boosted by as much as four holidays in the first week. Box office collections at many places were excellent during the holidays, but crashed once the holidays were over. Take the case of some centers. In Nagpur, collections on the 6th and 7th day were as low as 25% in some theaters. In Sangli (Maharashtra), the collections on Monday were (34,000/-) and Tuesday (27,000/-) compared to the Sunday’s collection (60,000/-). In spite of the week full of holidays the Katni (C.P. Berar) exhibitor will lose almost 50% of his MG that he paid to Raju Kothari, the distributor of The Hero.
The case of East Punjab is very interesting, exhibitors here, many of whom borrowed money on interest to book The Hero in their cinemas on extraordinary terms (MG´s, FH´s), are facing the prospect of losing 50% of their investments. The collections in East Punjab territory have been so bad that not only will many exhibitors lose about 40-50% of their investments but the film’s distributor too will lose heavily in spite of a fantastic coverage mainly due to the huge MG´s and FH´s received from over-enthusiastic exhibitors. The condition is no different in Rajasthan.
The C.I. distributor of The Hero has turned out to be a smart person, he had acquired the film at a reasonable price unlike his counterparts elsewhere and will be a happy man. Final Verdict While the outcome of Delhi-UP and Mumbai City is loud and clear, the movie is a winner here, the beneficiaries being Sunny Deol and the producers Times themselves (who have distributed The Hero in Delhi-UP and Mumbai themselves) the fate of the the other distributors except the CI distributor must be clear from what we have said above. Still we must wait for one more week before we have our final assessment, especially as the distribution price of The Hero is also debatable. Some put it as 3.25 cr /territory and others as 3.75-4 cr /territory.
