Interesting Information from YRF (taken from Blu-ray.com) forum.

Almost certain that YRF will beat out EROS once again with the next 10 Blu-Ray releases.

Dear All,

With reference to your queries on the Blu-ray, I am putting down the information.

1. We have released our film New York on Blu-ray recently. It is exclusively available along with Philips BRD Players in India through a strategic tie-up with them. It has been serviced to UK, USA and UAE through our regular distribution channels.

2. Our next 10 titles, already displayed on our website, will be released end November or early December as the process is very time consuming and we are making them with extra care on all quality aspects to give you best possible products. The authoring, glass master and the replication of these titles are being done outside India at one of the best facility in the world.

3. All our titles will have all regions playability and are BD50. They will have English, Arabic, Tamil and Telugu subtitles at 10 Bit resolution.

4. The picture (Film) will be full resolution (1920X1080P) high definition with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS sound along with additional Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo sound.

5. The special features are also included in few films, wherever we have them. However, these are in standard definition with Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo Sound as these are recorded in this format and cannot be upgraded like a film.

6. We don’t have an online payment mechanism as of now. All buyers in India have the option to pre-book these titles in a special offer till 31.10.2009 as per the details given on our website. All these orders will be shipped out in India to reach you before the retail launch and with no additional delivery charges.

7. They would be available in key retail outlets in select cities in India after this and you can buy them from stores like Music World, Planet M, Crossword, Rhythm House (Mumbai) and many others.

8. All buyers outside India can contact my colleague Gaurav at gaurav@yashrajfilms.com for further information on local distributors in select countries, which can be contacted for info on Blu-ray products from time to time.

9. Any further queries on the technical specifications can be addressed to my colleague Victor at victor@yashrajfilms.com.

Here’s wishing you a very Happy Diwali.

Regards,

Vijay Kumar

Maybe some of our zulm experts need to ask victor why YRF does not include lossless audio.

Not a bad idea to email victor at YRF to ask about lossless audio in a civil manner (with out abusive words like "why the hell don't you include lossless audio" ).

Please be civil when emailing Victor so we don't lose this channel of communication thanks to a few people who cannot control sending abusive emails!

Shame on Yash Raj, once again the Bollywood movie fan is going to get shafted. NO LOSSLESS AUDIO and even worse, they don't even feel the need to try and explain or justify, although personally I think this is unjustifiable, why there will only be DVD quality sound on a High Definition format.

If they are too cheap to pay for DTS-HD MA liscensing, they can always provide a lossless 'LPCM' audio track. There is no liscensing fee involved in that.

I dont believe the reason that we are including special features so we will not be using HD audio is something I would buy.

Many thanks for your query.
We are encoporating all the special features in the BD 50 of all our
titles.
This is taking up space and that's the reason we are not using
uncompressed HD audio.
But rest assured that those films that do not have special features we
will have DTS HD encorporated.

Victor

Hi Victor,
I have some technical questions regarding the YRF Blu-Rays that
will be released towards end of november or early december. I noticed
that in New York Blu-Ray you did not include any uncompressed audio be
it DTS HD-MA/DD TrueHD/LPCM. Is there any reason why you made this
choice, I dont believe that on BD50 disc there would be significant loss
in video quality if any one of these audio tracks is included along with
another multichannel lossy audio format like DD5.1/DTS. As a customer I
want the best quality in terms of audio and video when I buy a Blu-Ray
disc. I noticed that you are following the same for the newer YRF
release. There have been other Blu-Ray releases made by your sister
company Ayngaran which have lossless audio format apart from having
reference quality video as well. I believe quality need not be
compromised. Waiting for your reply.

This is so retarded. Next thing thing they will say is we had to cut out part of the film because we did not have enough space to include some stupid extra.

HEAR THIS BOLLYWOOD.

NOTHING SHOULD TAKE PRECEDENCE OVER THE AUDIO & VIDEO QUALITY OF THE MAIN FEATURE. NOTHING!

In any case the easiest solution was to include the extras on a seperate DVD while the main feature is presented on a BD in 1080p Video & DTS-HD MA Audio. How simple is that? In fact they could market the titles with tweo different SKUs. A two disc (1BD + 1 DVD) special edition with extras and a single disc edition without the extras for those who don't really care for the extras.

more contact from Victor @ YRF

No issues at all. It is my pleasure to respond back to you.
We have done restoration from the original negatives which was scanned
at 2K.
After all the pinholes, scratches vertical lines etc have been restored
we have then transferred onto SRW master which is at a resolution of
1920 X 1080.
The new titles we have done so from the DPX files to SRW master.
Please rest assured that we have taken utmost of care in authoring our
YRF Blu-ray discs for the optimum video quality and in perfect mint
condition.
Also to add on 1 more reason why we have not got HD audio streams is
that the consumer will need a surround amp with HD digital
compatibility.
The old surround amps with DD & DTS will not be able to play out HD
audio stream and if they want to play out through the old amps then they
will have to do so by using analogue 5.1 cable connections and not
optical or co-axial digital connections.
I do hope this provides you with the information that you need.
Do let me know if you need any further clarifications.
Regards
Victor

Hi Victor,
I would firstly like to thank you for taking time out of your
busy schedule to reply to my queries. I was wondering if you could shed
some light on the technical details of the upcoming YRF Blu-Ray discs.
Were these discs authored from the DPX intermediate or were they scanned
from the original masters. Were there any particular restoration work
done on some of the earlier movies. I am really curious on what I can
expect in these Blu-Ray discs. Any details on where they are authored
would be really appreciated.

Regards,

This, is an even more stupid reason than the one given earlier, ie. lack of space due to extras, and is totally untrue. Someone really needs to give these guys a crash course in the technical details of Blu-Ray discs and specially on how the new HD audio formats work. Both, 'DTS-HD Master Audio' & 'Dolby TrueHD' are completely backward compatible with older recievers and processors. When using an optical or co-axial digital connection, the BD player automatically outputs the core audio stream. In the case of 'DTS-HD Master Audio' the full lossless HD bitstream is output via the HDMI connector, while the core DTS 1536 kbps bitstream is output from the optical/co-axial digital connector, thus benefitting even "old amps". Which, by the way, is also a huge improvement over DTS on DVD, since DTS on DVD is mostly limited to only 768 kbps.

Bottom line, EVERYONE benefits from having a lossless 'DTS-HD Master Audio' track on the Blu-ray disc. Finally for the love of god, please stop perpetuating this nonsense, that somehow including 'DTS-HD Master Audio' or even 'Dolby TrueHD' tracks on a BD are at the expense of old amps, for it is not true.

What Victor wrote back was correct on the type of cables needed. With that being a valid point the majority of people in India are using older receivers which do not support or have HDMI which is needed for the newer HD audio codecs.

Info below is taken from Home Theater Audio

Cables Needed: Toslink (Optical) or Coaxial S/PDIF cannot carry a 5.1 LPCM signal, so the signal will be reduced to 2 channels only. However, any version of HDMI connection can carry the LPCM signal in full quality. Multi-Channel Analog Cables can also be used (see footnote)..

Cables Needed: Toslink (Optical) or Coaxial S/PDIF cannot carry a TrueHD signal and will automatically play the standard Dolby Digital AC-3 track instead. If the player converts the TrueHD to PCM, the signal can be transmitted over any version of HDMI. If the TrueHD signal is transmitted via bitstream, HDMI 1.3 will be needed. Multi-Channel Analog Cables can also be used (see footnote).

Cables Needed: Same as Dolby TrueHD, except if Toslink (Optical) or Digital S/PDIF is used, the standard DTS Digital track will be played.
