My condolences to the family & friends of the late-great poet Kaifi Azmi. Not only will he be a great lost to Hindi Cinema, but also to the world of classic urdu poetry. The lyrics he had written for the classic song in Pakeezah ("Chalta Chalta") will be echoed for years and years to come.

Kaifi Azmi a great poet and also a great human being. One who cared for the down trodden and dedicated much of his life and earnings in the betterment of his village.

Few of his unforgettable songs:

'Chalte chalte ... yuhin koi mil gaya tha' Pakeezah

'Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam.... tum rahein na tum, hum rahein na hum' Kaagaz Ke Phool

'Ya dil ki suno duniyawalon ya mujhko abhi chhup rehne do.....Yeh phool chaman main kaisa khila, maali ki nazar mein pyar nahin' Anupama

'Yeh nayan dare dare' Kohra

'Yeh duniya yeh mehfil' Heer Ranjha

'Milo na tum toh hum ghabraye' Heer Ranjha

'Baharon mera jeevan bhi sanwaro' Aakhri Khat

'Tum itna kyon muskura rahe ho, kya gham hai jisko chhupa rahe ho.... Jin zakhmon ko waqt bhar chuka hai, tum kyon unhe chhede jaa rahe ho' Arth

And ofcourse the immortal 'Kar chale hum fida jaan-o-tan saathiyon... Ab tumhare hawale watan saathiyon' from Haqeeqat with lines like 'Zinda rehne ke mausam bahut hai magar, jaan dene ki rut roz aati nahin... baandh lo apne sar pe kafan saathiyon'.

India has lost one of its greatest poets and in Kaifi Azmi's own words 'Woh chiraag bujh rahein hain, mere saath jalte jalte'.

I do like Kaifi Azmi's lyrics especially from Anupama (Yaa Dil Ki Suno Duniyaan Waalon) but was pissed off by an interview he gave Pritish Nandy a few years ago, bad mouthing Gulzar calling him a 'fake romanticist' and calling Javed Akhtar a better poet. Akhtar is a good poet but not at the expense of nepotism and I was since upset with Azmi. But I guess that does not take away from his genuine talent and great writing. May his soul rest in peace.
