I always wondered that this song is too short in video but never could identify where. All versions looked identical but sure, one or the other verse was missing in different versions and hence looked complete. Took me a while, quite a while actually, to figure out the reason. So, here is another one min of content that's not in 1974 version but can be found in audio.

Ye Mera Prem Patr song is just the Rafi version at this site though. Didn't check other songs yet.

"O Mere Sanam" song: Smashits.com version is Sangam song till 4 min 28 sec but after that music keeps going for another 1 min 30 sec that's the same music as Mera Naam Joker just before "Jaane Kahan Gaye Wo Din" It happens often, they use same music in more than one film. One Sangam music segment for sure is exactly the same in Shammi Kapoor's RajKumar, for example.

Muz, could you pl check from your LP if that last 1 min 30 sec music segment is in there or just an error in that website compilation ??

This extra music is not on the LP - and also it isn't actually anywhere in the movie - so I think it is an error on the web-site as you indicated.

I've been working on putting the Sangam lyrics, from the Orig LP associated Sangam lyrics booklet (done now), into roman script. I've been using one of my above post to compose the text that also includes lyrics comparison to 1974 version and other hints. (As I complete work on one song, I make it reg font size. Ones not checked yet stay in small font until I check them). So far, Sangam lyrics book seems to be most complete and I've listed various missing segments and short cuts in 1974 version. Some things still need to be verified against the 1964 version LP for which I've to depend on Muz (done now).

I leave it to Muz to verify the wordings and repeat wordings in the 1964 LP, with the lyrics that I sorted out, bit by bit as I post them or all at once in the end. It'll be easier to check one song at a time. It's not easy to concentrate on more than one song at a time and to find minor differences that eventually pile up missing run-time.

It was rare in those days, but still, sometimes, not everything on the OST made it to the final cut of the movie.

This is more common now, even in Bollywood movies.

I'm just trying to figure out what's the missing material that might have been in the orig 238 min cut of the film. Fortunately or un-fortunately, now I've identified (details coming up) almost all of original cut of 238 min without incuding Lata solo of Prem Patra song that I know audio was recorded and released. I say 'unfortunately' because it implies that Lata solo version of Prem Patra song never was in the film. It was just audio only (see my earlier post about Lata's comments).

When I saw the film in 1964, in the first or 2nd week of its release, there were many rumors going on that "O Mehbooba", "Dost Dost Na Raha", and may be another one, have been "cut". (Someone even said, Sangam Hoga Ke Nahin has been cut by the censors) I was pleasantly surprised that all these songs were IN. Well, this word "cut" could mean two ways. One, "cut" full song; Two, song is "cut" shorter. Quite possible that these songs were cut somewhat, even at that time, without us realizing that a few lines are missing. I recall, initial reaction was positive but there were many of the opinion that film is dragging. Theater owners too wanted to cut time somewhat so as to accomodate 3 shows and don't stay open too long. Recall, there also was a required mandatory screening of a Documentary (20 min), in those days. Plus, theaters also wanted to show commercial slides.

It's interesting how big a disaster/ effect cuts can make ?? And, what's director's vision ?? I don't think Sangam Director Raj Kapoor ever wanted to portray Sunder, character played by himself, as a Bully. And, yet that's what wikipedia Sangam review says. All and out negative character. Just depends what cut of the film they saw.

Summary:

Lyrics from Sangam Lyrics Book in Roman Script are in my earlier post.
Following the written lyrics (Thanks to Muz for supplying the 1964 version lyrics) and counting # of repeats of catch lines etc, gave me an exact account of Sangam songs. (See my earlier post)

YRF DVD (213 min video = 222 min film) is aprox 10 min shorter (film time) than 1974 Sangam release (232 min). Of this 10 min, about 4 min is in starting titles and Sunder Gopal Radha childhood play. Remaining 6 min are by a few secs here and a few secs there and must have resulted from splicing/ damage of old old print (1974 cc, DVD in 2001).
My Esquire VHS is full 232 min (223 min video = 232 min film), same as stated on 1974 cc. Sangam orig run time (1964) has been stated to be 238 min. All of the 6 min discrepancy, 6 min 33 sec is detected in songs only.

So, most likely, it's these songs as stated in Sangam lyrics book (audio is avail too) is what was in 1964 version and and the shorter versions of these songs is what account for the shorter 1974 version of Sangam.

Despite this, I know for sure:
1) One minor shot, but interesting, missing after "Buddha Mil Gaya" song. (2-4 sec)

2) at least one shot right after VMK reading "Prem Patr" lyrics that's missing. (could be 5 sec or could be even 3 min if complete Lata verse was in 1964 release).

And, then there is one catch line repeat missing in "Har Dil Jo" song.

Assuming that Orig release was 238 min and had full songs, Lata solo couldn't have been included. If Lata solo was IN, then some other songs verses must have been cut in the orig 1964 version. Or, may be orig release was longer than 238 min ??

2) Sangam Hindi Lyrics Booklet has all the lyrics but it doesn't indicate repeat lines etc. I indicated repeated lines by listening to these songs.
