Doesn't know how this happened? Look, the film industry sends mostly crappy or average films every year, look at the past with Devdas and Andaz. As for Eklavya giving a wrong impression of India, I'd say "BOLLYWOOD" gives a totally wrong impression of India. The only two bollywood films nominated in the history of the Oscars are Mother India and Lagaan and rightly so. Those films stand out from the rest and you can see why.

Talwar is sarcasm in person. "If Mr. Chopra thinks my film about the religious divide and brotherhood is a load of shit then he must be right. He is, after all, the maker of such undying masterpieces as Kareeb, Mission Kashmir and Eklavya. I'm ready to take lessons in filmmaking from Mr Chopra if he's willing to take me on as an apprentice. Maybe then I'll stop making immature films."

Too many films are made in India about the religious divide and social evils that are promoted to mainly westerners, especially those shown at film festivals. That I'm sure international audiences are now thinking "Damn, is this all India has to show?". I know India has these problems, but why can't they show somthing different once in a while? Maybe that's why Monsoon wedding won the award in Venice, it tackled issues but didn't aim to depress everyone.
I haven't seen Dharm, but if it's one of those soppy "we're all brothers, let's kiss each other's ass" type of film then I'm glad it never got sent. But if it's a serious and well-made film that doesn't take sides and tells it like it is then it should be promoted. Mr & Mrs Iyer was a good example of a film that tackled communal isses without taking sides. Black Friday was another one.
Just another thing, I think films made about India and it's problems just inform foreign audiences about what might be going on in India but they do little to actually help the problem.

Dharam
Dharam
Irked by Oscar jury's preference for 'Eklavya' over 'Dharm', as this years official entry from India to Oscars in the foreign film category, Bhavna Talwar producer of 'Dharm' has served legal notice to the jury. Talwar has asked for the preference of 'Dharm' over 'Eklavya', it is reliably learnt. He has also challenged the credentials of the jury members, reveal sources close to the filmmaker.

The films that were in contest for the berth were as follows 'Eklavya', 'Dharm', 'Chak De! India', 'Gandhi My Father', 'Guru', 'Vivaah' and 'Swami'.

The 80th Oscars awards will be held on the 24th of February, 2008 in Los Angeles.

You mean to say that Gandhi, my father was in competition and didn't get selected! It still may not have a chance to win an Oscar, but I highly doubt that Eklavya will.

twiddly dee twiddly dumb film doesn’t live up to hype. Dragged. Stuffy. Romance scenes were a boredom follow-up of Parineeta koochie koochie amours excluding bedroom scene. Dutt sounded like a replay using same voice impersonation from previous films Amitabh used expressions that speak with eyes, Boman and Saif were ok. Vydia just quietly hummed along not doing anything above or beyond her talents from Parineeta. Its much ado about nothing suppose a bhoot show would’ve been better for oscars(lol)

VVC is WASTING HIS ENERGY fighting those who don't think Eklavya deserves to go to the Oscars.

Dude, get over it!

Unless Vidhu realizes that his ad and lobbying campaign with the Academy needs to start pronto, his flick stands no chance of seeing a nomination.

What a disgrace to verify if Eklavya was a favored choice @home!

1. India do not make oscar worthy films..period.

2. Occasional, are gone un seen, un patronized.
3. All Indian awards and accolades are FAVOR based..period!

I'm sure if they looked to other languages or at least to less mainstream Hindi films they would find something worthy of submitting to the Oscars.

I totally agree. Because they can't make oscar-worthy films you have people like Mahesh Bhatt saying the film industry shouldn't bother with what westerners think. He should stop copying films from the west.

There was an interesting feature today on NDTV about the whole oscar controversy and it made me understand better what sort of films have an chance and which don't. Because of the problems caused India may not have an offical selection this year. That may be a good thing because next year they will have to be more careful with what they send.

Regional films have no chance because the team responsible for choosing these films are all made of up people connected to the Hindi film industry and they are not going to give less mainstream films a chance either. Because most of the time the films from other parts of the world that win oscars are more likely to be commercial films of their particular countries, not 'independent' films (e.g. 'Amelie', 'Pan's Labyrinth', 'The lives of others' are commercial films). So India is sending their commercial films which comes in the unfortunate form of "bollywood". Mother India and Lagaan were I think they only two 'bollywood' films worthy to have ever come out of India to have been considered for oscars. Salaam Bombay was the other one that does not come under Hindi commercial cinema (bollywood). If they're only going to send commercial films, they need to vastly improve their quality in all aspects. It was revealed that Black Friday was a favourite contender for the oscars, but the team responsible didn't even consider it. What a waste, but maybe they thought it wasn't commerical enough for them. That was easily the best film I saw from India in the past year.

Also because India is now making some of it's 'festival material' films in English to appease western audiences, this is not going down well. A film is not going to be liked any more because it's in English, however it has no chance of competing at the Oscars or in many foreign-language film categories at different film festivals. That's why films like Monsoon Wedding and Mr & Mrs Iyer don't stand a change to even be considered for an oscar, so there's no point in sending them. The film "Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi" was well liked by critics but would never have been put forward for an oscar because according to Vindo Pande on today's NDTV "it was in 75% English" as he told the film's director Sudhir Mishra. In a way I agree, India shouldn't make English films and expect them to compete in the foreign-language category.

Will 'Eklavya' be withdrawn from Oscars?Add to hotlist
By Our Correspondent ©2007 Bollyvista.com

Eklavya
Eklavya
After receiving a letter from the Academy Awards, Vinod Pande, the chairman of the selection committee of the FFI, the official body for the selection of films to the Oscars, has called an emergency meeting today to discuss the selection of 'Eklavya' as this year's official entry from India in foreign film category.

The selection of 'Eklavya' led to controversy created by Bhavna Talwar's filing an appeal in court, the decision of which is being awaited. The Academy has asked the FFI to reconsider its decision immediately, as the deadline is approaching fast. It is likely that the verdict of the court will come after the deadline and the Academy's decision to consider 'Eklavya' as India's entry can't wait that long. Will 'Eklavya' remain the official entry or will India drop itself out from this year's Oscars Awards? The answer will be known today.

*** VVC needs some F*** JADOO TONA, MANTAR JANTAR to bail out!may be JB can help!

Eklavya out of Oscar race

rediff Entertainment Bureau | January 16, 2008 12:22 IST

Vidhu Vinod Chopra's film, Eklavya, is out of the Oscar race.

In a list released by the Oscars' official website, Eklavya did not find a mention among the nine films nominated in the Best Foreign Language Films category.

The nine films that made it are:

Austria: The Counterfeiters
Brazil [Images]: The Year My Parents Went on Vacation
Canada [Images]: Days of Darkness
Israel: Beaufort
Italy [Images]: The Unknown Woman
Kazakhstan: Mongol
Poland: Katyn
Russia [Images]: 12
Serbia: The Trap

Eklavya, starring Amitabh Bachchan [Images], Saif Ali Khan [Images], Sanjay Dutt [Images] and Boman Irani, had faced a lot of opposition when it was selected to be India's choice for the Oscars. Director Bhavna Talwar, who's Dharam was among the favourites, claimed that the jury was bias, and was partial to Eklavya. She even went to court regarding the issue. Seems like the fuss was not worth it after all.

Dharm was definitely the superior of the two.
