There is a sample here: http://maxupload.com/D3C67343
This is not from the DVDs I know. Does anyone have a DVD that looks exactly like this? What differences do you see?

1200*496 (not exactly 720p). DIVX.
Did you mean what I personally have seen and not this online stuff?
What I have seen personally is 1080p and not this downsampled 1200*496 material.

but I assume you have not seen final product as authoring is not complete?

How would it compare to this sample or a GOOD HD DVD e.g King Kong or a GOOD BR DVD like POTC or GHOST RIDER etc

I know the current version of the HD.
There is no comparison to King Kong etc. because DCH was simply not shot that way. The equipment used was worse and diffusion filters removed additional detail. There is no detail on the negative as on modern Hollywood films that are sharp. But there is detail beyond the best DVDs so it is still worth upgrading. It looks far more filmlike and lacks all the DVD artifacts most DVDs are riddled with, especially Bollywood DVDs. Color is much better resolved too and the sound will be lossless. It will show the film as it is minus some of the technical problems of the original negative (editing splices, dirt, tears etc. which are all on the current DVDs).

I have not seen any prints but they must be rather soft too since the negative is sharper than any print. :D

The screen shots I saw on bwt earlier on in the morning have changed now - the new one are much better - maybe possibly it is a legit HD-DVD rip - there's a few comparison of the Sony DVD-9 & HD rip shots too.

It is not a HD-DVD rip because there is no HD-DVD. It looks like taken from a test MPEG 2 encoding of a preliminary version of the HD transfer. This encoding was never destined for publication. Whoever took and published it is a thief and committed a crime.
Very sad as this undermines the restoration efforts for this film. :(

Doesn't the picture look a bit squashed a la DEI first anamorphic DVDs? I hate d/loading so I wouldn't be tempted - but if the original is going to have the squish effect I wouldn't buy that either.

Regular divx players will not play the file. I am assuming you need an upconversion player with divx compatibility.
