The screen shots and the sample of the version made by Canuckerfan offer the best quality I have ever seen of Sholay!
The DVD by Carlotta is really good, but unfortunately does not have the director’s cut.

Bollywood films are massive in France and Germany at the moment. These good DVDs are still few and far between though, even over there.

Wow, I never really knew that. But then again the French are always into world cinema. I know arthouse films like those of Satyajit Ray are probably more popular in Europe than in India, but I'm surprised why they would like "bollywood".

As for Sholay, which DVD has the prison comedy sequence cut out? I'm saying this because if I even get a copy of Sholay on DVD, I want to make sure it DOESN'T have these scenes in it. I hate these scenes so much and think it ruins the film as I have only seen the version with these scenes in the past few years on Zee TV. Before that since I was a Kid I only saw the version shown on Channel 4 (UK) which does not have these scenes in. I think that version is vastly superior to the Zee TV version, even though the Zee TV version has extended action sequences.

On the subject of Sholay I heard on the Radio earlier today, that one of the songs is a copy of another song (probably non-indian). This is shocking, what could it be? I'm prepared to be disappointed!

No DVD has the prison sequences cut -- all DVDs have them :)
Indian theatres have seen Sholay with and without prison sequence -- the latter, only for a very short time.

The "Asrani" ("prison") scene is great; I'm glad that all the DVD releases of Sholay seem to contain it.

Does the plain EROS DVD (only an Eros logo on the package) contain the EROS/B4U version or the EROS/DEI version?

I keep ordering EROS versions of this film from online retailers and I get stuck with the wretched Ultra disc time after time. I know a couple of stores that have the plain EROS version I can just buy off the shelf, but which cut/transfer is it?

I have got this one from EROS (British disc I think. It has the PG-Sign on the cover.):

My DVD contains the director’s cut of 204 minutes. The Eros catalogue (overseas) gives a running time of 204 minutes, too.
The catalogue no° written on my DVD is DVD-E 016.

Guys I am starting a petition against the quality of the SHOLAY DVD...can each member of the board cut and paste the email below and send it to the following addresses:

UK-business@erosintl.co.uk
India-business@erosmultimedia.net
joshi@erosintl.co.uk
krishna@erosintl.com

Also pass this on to all your friends and family so that they can email it to the above email addresses :-)

Dear Eros,

I like many others is huge fan of the film Sholay. When the DVD was released I purchased the Eros-DEI version which is the theatrical cut and then I also purchased the Eros-B4U version which is the directors cut. However I am still disappointed that full justice and quality treatment has not been given to a film of this calibre. And Sholay is meant to be the biggest and best film of Bollywood? The DVD is just not up to it, whether its in terms of quality or features. I mean you could release a double disc set which has the remastered version, which allows access to extra scenes, and gives u an option to watch the DVD with or without the directors cut. When I was doing my research on the Sholay DVD releases I came across a new version which has been released in France. Below is the link of this product.

http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B ... 25-7659629

After looking at the product I was impressed, as it it double disc and offers special features like interviews and so on. The film is spilt over to discs to maintain the quality. Sholay was shot in 70mm and 30mm, so you could also provide more options. I feel Eros has not made an effort to revitalise this classic on DVD, look at Hollywood films, they don't leave a single stone untouched when revitalising a classic. The menu of the DVD is awful, I am a part time designer. If you cant find no one with original and creative ideas I am free to offer help. I would do it voluntary, just to make sure the film has been given fair treatment on DVD. I mean look at the french guys they have at least tried to revitalise the film, and the french market is a niche market for Bollywood films. By releasing a new special edition of Sholay, you would be attracting a larger market U.S, U.K., Australia and India. I personally think a new edition of Sholay should consist of the following:
Double/Triple Disc Set (Possibly spilt film to maintain quality)
Special Feature Disc, which includes Sholay trailers, interviews, picture gallery (I am sure you can get hold of interviews, as the French DVD does have some interviews)
Special Box Set (Like Devdas, LOC, these films are no way bigger than Sholay)
I am speaking on behalf of millions who have been disappointed by the unfair treatment by Eros to a grand film like Sholay. You guys should take a leaf out of excel home videos who have released the Lagaan DVD in lavish manor, check it out in the following link:

http://www.musicyogi.com/NewsLetters/La ... _Offer.htm

Another reason to release a special edition is because the new Sholay is coming out, so by releasing a special box set it will sell like hot cakes.

Also will you guys ever release the directors cut of Shaan, because the current Eros DVD has the following scenes cut:

Please do not ignore this email, and I would be grateful if you could reply back.

Many Thanks,

YOUR NAME

How can you can expect any thing better than DIRECTOR's CUT. They gave us the best of their capability.

If that's a crap, pirates are the only ones capable of giving quality.

Good initiative...
I'd add a note for packing all versions of Sholay in one box :-)

I think that they will probably ignore the message - but you have put a lot of effort in to crafting a really nice message so I will send it to the addresses that you have listed.

Having said that - I own all the versions - and I must say that the French DVD (depite being in the OAR) is not really that good. Sorry - but I watched it last week and had to switch to the EROS version as the sound quality on the French version was terrible. Anyway - if I hear anything I will post it back on the board.
