Audio

An absolutely fabulous soundtrack. The sound is big, deep and expansive, with terrific lef-right sepration (the explosions seem to arc across the room), and powerful surround presence on the part of both music and sound effects. The music sounds great, the transfer more than doing justice to the sometimes very infectious melodies. All of this applies to the Hindi soundtrack. The English dubbing is okay, as dubbing goes, but inevitably detracts from the performances.

Video

The video isn't bad, but isn't quite up to the standard of the audio. The 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen is preserved, and the blacks are pretty good, but the colours aren't always as vibrant as they could be (though they really come alive in some of the musical numbers). There are moments too of grain and a slight flicker. Once in a while there is some speckling too.

I think i have got a pirate!! As I cant get the english audio on mine and the sound is dull two channel but pic is really good!!

Seeking to fill the void left by the child he lost in a tragic accident, a Kashmir cop (Dutt) adopts the son of an innocent couple he unintentionally killed in a raid on Muslim separatists. But that's just the first 30 minutes of Mission, a ludicrously overstuffed Bollywood import that doesn't really get going until the boy learns the truth about his foster father and turns to a life of terrorism. Meanwhile, the movie careens between mawkish romance, Matrix-style action, and corny musical numbers. It'd be laughable if the film didn't so flagrantly trivialize Kashmir's real-life strife.

Image Transfer Review: Mission Kashmir is presented in a sharp 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. Image detail is excellent, with really not much to complain about at all. Colors are bright, though the overall film tends to rely on a steady undercurrent of a deep golden hue. The scene where Preity Zinta performs the Bhumbro song is a burst of contrasting bright colors that is reproduced perfectly. Black levels are solid, and shadow delineation is strong. There was some minor shimmer in spots, but not to distraction.

Beautiful.

Image Transfer Grade: A-

Audio Transfer Review: The preferred choice here is the 5.1 Dolby Digital track in the film's original Hindi. Rear channel activity is minimal, but the fronts really come alive with some excellent directional imaging. Dialogue is well-mixed, and the musical numbers sound deep and full-bodied.

A badly dubbed English 5.1 track is also provided, and the voices are incredibly stiff and do not match the actors at all.

Audio Transfer Grade: B+

I heard Mission Kashmir R2 won't be out til' September!

I finally rented MK from Blockbuster yesterday. The English track turns the film into a comedy, especially at the end where Hrithik is talking about the "snow covered meadow." And the way Hrithik's voice actor says "Shankaracharya" is funny too.

The cinematography in this film was just stunning, though I could have done without the songs altogether.

Prince Naz or the Dumb #### from Entertainment Weekly dont have a FUCKIN CLUE about "Good" Indian Movies. Infact the movie does deal with real issues that many Kashmiris face ie the brainwashing of young innocent kids/terrorism. As for the music being corny - well thats a joke itself!

This movie may not have come off well for the western audiances due to problems with translation (subtitling and dubbing), but the Indian audiances "should" have understood the premise and the real message of the movie. However unfortunately even many of the Indians failed to recognise and appreciate the true class of this Brilliant movie which is much more than merely an action flick. Every aspect from the technicalities to the acting and storytelling were executed with pure class with a touch of genius!
This movie was a refreshing break from all the melodramatic bullshit that Bollywood churns out 90% of the time.

According to VVC during the making of M:K, he said the film doesn't deal with the realities of Kashmir. I'm not putting the film down or anything, I thought it was technically brilliant. But what's the real deal? You say the film dealth with true Kashmir issues while VVC rejects the thought. Also, while M:K was a one of the best films of 2000, IMO it wasn't the best of the year. I believe Hey Ram was highly overlooked that year.
