The PS3 goes on sale in US this weekend isn't it? Probably best value Blu-ray player you'll get, if you manage to get one that is

I read that they're giving away a Blu-Ray version of Talladega Nights with the PS3. Not exactly a title that will showcase the technology

I disagree with Nolan Bushnell's comments, but read on...

Q: What about Sony’s PlayStation 3 Strategy?

A:
I think Sony shot themselves in the foot… there is a high probability [they] will fail. The price point is probably unsustainable. For years and years Sony has been a very difficult company to deal with from a developer standpoint. They could get away with their arrogance and capriciousness because they had an installed base. They have also historically had horrible software tools. You compare that to the Xbox 360 with really great authoring tools [and] additional revenue streams from Xbox live… a first party developer would be an idiot to develop for Sony first and not the 360. People don’t buy hardware, they buy software.

Q: But what about Sony’s success with the PlayStation and PS2? They sold more than 100 million of each system.

A: It wasn’t anything brilliant that they did. With the PS and PS2 it was timing. They had the right pricing at the right time [and were] almost the accidental winner. It would not surprise me if a year from now they’ll be struggling to sell 1 million units. [Factoring in the PS3’s price], I think in the U.S. the number of early adopters you have is actually around 300,000.

Sony's PS3 suffers software problems

At least the batteries don't explode

By Nick Farrell: Tuesday 14 November 2006, 13:56
SONY'S new super soaraway PS3 console seems to be having a few software problems.

Touted as being backward compatible with older models, it turns out the machine can't run about 200 PS and PS2 games.

Sony's complaints department, which is probably the busiest part of Sony these days, has admitted that audio features do not work on some software titles when played on the PS3 and other games just do not work at all. A spokesSony said that the unit will fix the PS3 problems by offering online upgrades for system software.

Analysts are saying that this is just one of those sorts of glitches you get after a major product launch. Microsoft got loads of complaints in 2002 that its Xbox was sandpapering CDs when it first launched. But Sony should have known better. When it released the PS2 in 2000 there were all sorts of compatibility problems with earlier software.

No-one is wondering why, when the console was delayed so long, that no one spent a weekend going through the Playstation back catalogue seeing if the games worked.

It looks like Europe, which has been told it can't have any PS3s till March, will really miss much. It might take that long to sort out all the glitches.

its funny how nobody voted for HD-DVD alone, but it seems people that bought players have bought HD-DVD, and zero Blu-Ray.

Poll should now read: What have you bought?

I think one of the reasons more people are buying HD-DVD players is cuz of the price. Blu-Ray players are twice the price and currently the HD-DVD picture quality is just as good as Blu-Ray. Sony made alot of promises on which they have not delivered.

I bought the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive for $160 with the King Kong movie from Circuit City ($200-$40 coupon) and couldn't be happier!!

I saw the hacking thing, but until you have a medium to be able to copy too its not that useful. Fine you can rip to PC but not really good enuff......until the price of blank media capable of mass storage comes out and cheap PC based drives with Blue ray recordable or HDR then there is nothing to get over excited about............but its a step in the *right* direction!

I'm waiting for the Blue Ray versions as all DVDs are coming from 1080p HD masters. No doubt Sony will release them in 2007.

I agree!! who wants to watch/buy SD once you have experience blue ray, or HD DVD.

But Mike, unfortunately even in current status quo, you have to have 1080P TV with HDMI to tap full potential of these format!

I must tell you PS3 is an amazing machine too!

Well, I have sampled about 20 HD-DVDs on my Toshiba E1 and a 1080p computer monitor that has no HDCP and can not deal with 2:3 pull down. :D (my projector is in the hospital).
I can watch stuff via DVI and HDCP stripping box and 720p (1080i is too ugly due to pulldown). Looks very good except the monitor is crap for watching movies, but you can see the quality/detail of the signal. Stuff like "The Searchers" (50 years old) is spectacular. My projector can not come back fast enough.

Ridge Racer 7 runs at 1080p... but that doesn't mean anything, people doing comparisons give the edge to Xbox 360 running at 720p.

BTW which Sony Bravia set have you got?
