Arsh and Rana thank you for the warm welcome. Can’t really explain my silence other than appreciate Zulm for educating me about Progressive DVDs during my early DVD years (1999 to 2000). Although I used to frequent AVSforum as well as HomeTheaerSpot before ZULM, couldn’t figure out why our DVD’s are bad except DVDs from DEI.
As some of you know that I am the original proponent of Force Weave technique to identify Progressive dvds from Interlaced dvds. Zulm.net used to be the place to discuss about quality of Bollywood DVDs.
Since many people are going big with plasma/LCD and projectors, I hope they welcome some good discussion on quality once again. Indeed the news of an Indian HD-DVD is bigger than big for any quality freaks. I am enjoining HD-DVDs on a Sanyo-z5 720P projector sourced from a Toshiba HD-XA1, projected on to a 106 inch fixed screen that too on a dedicated home theater built entirely by yours truly Ganti(took 4 months to build).

Congrats on your set up! I did have XA1, solid player but pick up was very very slow and right around time when Gen 2 were announced so I returned mine!

Now I am trying XBOX 360 HD DVD drive with VGA out, that can do 1080P. I still have to find athe best 1080P TV! Considering sony Bravia LCD ! I would love plasma by pioneer but still long way I guess!

I'm looking for TV now too, possibly a 1080p panel although not too fussed over resolutions as I'm restricted to max of 40” / 42" size. Quite like the new Bravia 1080p panels from Sony, but also consider the 1080p panel from Samsung;

Most LCDs and a few Plasmas have 1080P native resolution. IMHO, all else staying the same, prefer Plasma if up to 50% more in cost than LCD.
One good one that I know is Panasonics (55 inch) Plasma TV that's true 1080P (1920 X 1080 native res) and has exc contrast ratio etc.

But, if investing on 1080P TV mainly for Indian DVDs, we need to be sure that Indian DVDs will not be 1080P25 converted to 1080P24 using field averaging. Recall India, UK etc (source) are 50Hz countries and a big chunk of Indian DVD market is in 60 Hz countries.

I can still exchange XA1 to an A2 but not XA2 (don’t want to pay double the price). Do you think it’s worth the upgrade? I like trueHd through analog from xa1. Not planning to change my Receive for a HDMI input. I heard the A2 build is not as good as XA1 and the picture quality is almost the same.
Pros XA1:
1) solid build quality
2) 5.1 Analog for TrueHD
Pro A2:
1) fast loading time( 30 sec faster)
2) May be glitch fee in playing troubled disks?

If you are not planning to change your reciever then stick with it! If you paid around $400( lowest price on XA1) then I will recommend keep it!

I understand XA2 is few months away, and twice as much, but HDMI 1.3 and 1080P will be worth it esp when price drops

But again, if reciever issue! then HDA2 is not an option, esp if you are using analogues for DOLBY HD

It is kinda egg and chicken! as none of displays except one announced by EPSON is HDMI 1.3 and 1080P.

Out of sources..only PS3 and upcoming XA2 will be 1080P , HDMI 1.3!(PS3 does not do 720P unfortunately)

RECIEVERS are upto HDMI 1.2 capable, pioneer elite and Yamahas etc.

So, wait and see! I do have HDMI 1.2 PIONEER ELITE RECIEVER so, safe on that end!

Sony releases PS3 firmware 1.3, ignores 1080i woes [Updated]

Well whaddaya know. Sony just rolled out a global update for the PS3 this morning, fixing some of the smaller gripes with the console, and completely ignoring the only one we care about. Naturally, most people have been a bit anxious about that 1080i bug, especially since Sony retracted its initial statement about a fix being on the way, so instead of calming our fears with soothing PR statements or, perish the thought, actually fixing the problem, Sony is teasing us all with a re-org of display resolution hierarchy, moving 720p to below 1080i in preferences. Sony also added a BD/DVD image output option, for switching between automatic, RGB and Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr over HDMI. Slightly less exciting -- but still welcome -- are the additions of a utility to backup your SD cards, compact flash cards and USB memory sticks to the hard drive, and a HDD formatting option, to bring your PS3 back to spankin' new status. All that's great and all, but if Sony doesn't currently have 50 engineers chained to desks in Tokyo, feverishly working out a fix for this bug, we're not inviting Sony to our birthday party. So there!

Update: Well, we don't have a 1080i set to test it on, but from what it sounds like, perhaps this 1080i bug could be fixed after all. We received an email this afternoon from Sony, (pasted in full after the break) about firmware 1.3, and while it does not specifically address the bug, it does sound like it's been fixed. Check it out.

USB peripherals designed for PlayStation®2 titles, including steering wheels and flight sticks, can now be used when playing PlayStation 2 games on the PS3 system.
To install the latest system software on your PS3 system, you can select the System Update feature, use a PC to download the update data and transfer it to the PS3 system through storage media or a USB mass storage device, or install it using update data included on a game disc. when are the hd dvds for dch and don expected to be to be out?

Thanks for the suggestion.
I got the player for $500 which came with 2 free HD DVDs and a 4 year extended warranty.
Also since I am planning to keep Z5 for some time, until I can able to afford a 1080P Projector I should keep the XA1.

That is perfect! 2 DVDS and 4 years warranty, does make up for $100 etc.

In the US, no one is broadcasting any programming in 1080P. The highest is 1080i. There are no plans for any network to broadcast any 1080p material in the near future due to the high bandwith required.

Unless your display is larger than 60inches you would have a hard time telling the difference between 1080i and 1080p.
