Let's list down the legitimate remakes... ok, the illegit too ;--)

The Ashok Kumar starrer AFSANA made by B.R. Chopra was remade by B.R. Chopra as a Dilip Kumar starrer - DASTAAN.

(Ashok Kumar incidentally starred in yet another AFSANA with Pradeep Kumar.)

Sohrab Modi remade his own PUKAR (I think) thrice

Here are some more remakes;

1) B.R.Chopra remade Gumrah (Mala Sinha, Sunil Dutt & Asok Kumar) as Dahleez.
2) Ramanand Sagar remade Aankhen (Mala Sinha & Dharmendra) as Charas (Dharmendra & Hema Malini)
3) Bahurani (Mala Sinha & Guru Dutt) remade by Pramod Charkavarty as Jyoti (Jeetandra & Hema Malini).

By the was all these remakes didn't hold candel to far superior originals. The original were super hit's and remakes big flops except Charas which was just a marginal hit.

Another of course Baghban which is a remake of Zindagi (1976) with Mala Sinha & Sanjeev Kumar. AB was good in Baghban but Sanjeev was much much better and of course Hema Malini Couldn't hold a a candle to Mala Sinha's talent.

2) Sanmanassu ullavarkku Samadhanam (excellent performance from mohan lal and supporting cast...... I cried when i saw the remake ))- Thera ghar mera ghar

After this film I took an oath to never watch a remake of a regional film in hindi

3) Thala Vattom (One of the film where Mohan lal at his best) - Kyon Ki

4) Boeing Boeing (This film was an entry for Mohan lal to comedy films. remake from english to malayalam to hindi) - Garam Masala

5) Kilukkam (One of the best comedy films every created on Earth - Mohan lal and Jagathy were at their comedic best) - Doli sajakhe rakhana

6) Thevar Magan (kamal hassan film - Tamil) - Viraasat

7) Ramji Rao Speaking (not a mohan lal film, but a very funny film) - Hera Pheri

When we watch the originals we will realize that no north indian actors are a match for regional actors. Its sad that only Hindi movies are getting fame and publicity around the world. There are so many good directors and great actors in every part of indian cinema.. but.......

and then CHALBAZ

govinda's aunty no. 1 is a remake of not only mrs doubtfire but also an old hindi movie with paintal (i think) playing what govinda played in the remake. donn recall the name of the movie... even the dialogues are a ditto copy at some places.

That's quite a sweeping statement (that NO north Indian actor is a match for regional ones).

Why is considered politically correct for south indians to make judgements about north indians but not the other way round? It's the same with issues pertaining to men and women. Women seem to be considered morally superior. Of course there's the usual between blacks and whites in the west. You get so much blatant white bashing by blacks on TV, and never the other way round. It's just weird.

In any case, the politically incorrect reason (at least partly) why regional films do not attract as big an audience is that regional actors/stars seldom have the international appeal of Bollywood ones, who are very street-smart, are in-tune with international trends, speak good English (it helps!) and have loads of sex appeal. These might be shallow factors, but that's the world we live in.

Aside from that, of course, more people understand Hindi as well, especially if you count in Pakistanis. Another politically incorrect reason is that Hindi apparently sounds nicer than most regional languages (at least that's what most Malays will tell you) and that's partly why Hindi songs are so popular among Indonesians and Malaysians.

Anyways, why do you feel the need to bring down Bollywood if the regional industries don't do as well. Effectively you are saying that Bollywood should intentionally diminish its international appeal so that regional industries will have more screen space.

Doesn't it seem absurd when I put it in those words?
