2005 was flooded with many films. There were hits and misses, the best and the worst, both successful and unsuccessful ones to garner audiences attention. With the change in the trend of film making, the Indian audience is also getting more adaptive and intelligent and thus the filmmakers need to be doubly careful while choosing the subject of the film. Sex sleaze which found a big audience last year, failed to make any impact and comedy films dominated the screen all year round. Family films were welcomed warmly. Let’s go back and review the 12 months to find the biggest hits!

And the best film of the year is ‘No Entry’. After a span of eight years Boney Kapoor at last got a hit and what a hit it was. The trade was just surprised the way this film attracted the audience and minted money at the box office. With the acting prowess of Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor and Fardeen Khan along with sex sirens like Bipasha Basu, Lara Dutta, Esha Deol and Celina Jaitley, lapped up with awesome comedy, there was little chance that the film would fail. The film has done a business of more than Rs 40 crore!

The vibrant film ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ just made one roll their eyes over the interesting drama and the first time pairing of Amitabh and Abhishek together. Not to miss out Rani Mukherjee with another performance and never seen before Aishwarya Rai in Kajra re. Comedy was the forte of the film and it has been a bigger hit than ‘No Entry’ overseas. It just made a little less than ‘No Entry’ in terms of profit.

The touching family drama ‘Waqt: Race Against Time’ with the strong star cast of Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar also list amongst the big hits of the year. The film was welcomed warmly in the nation as well as overseas. Filmmaker Vipul Shah garnered Rs 20 crore from the business of the film.

‘Garam Masala’ released during the eve of Diwali was also a smashing comedy film that fetched Akshay Kumar another hit and proved that Priyadarshan has a long way to go as a comedy director. The film did very good business in the nation as well as overseas.

While all the films so far boasted of a big star cast, ‘Kya Kool Hai Hum’ came as a surprise when Tusshar Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh managed to shoulder the film to the hit mark. Good script and adult comedy in particular attracted the audience to the theatres. Ekta Kapoor made Rs 10 crore out of this low budget film made at the cost of Rs 5 crore.

Yash Raj banner delivered another hit in the year after ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ with ‘Salaam Namaste’. A quite bold outing by Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta, the kiss scene, good music all seem to work in favor of the film at last. The film did a business of around Rs 7 crore.

Inspired from The Godfather, ‘Sarkar’ with the father son pairing of Amitabh and Abhishek, did well in Mumbai and also in the multiplex. Ram Gopal Varma made Rs.16 crore out of the film.

‘Page 3’ a low budget film by director Madhur Bhandarkar was the first hit of the year. The film appealed to the critics and the masses alike and went to become one of the great hits of the year. The novel script made this low budget film do good business.

Unusual and loaded with spirit ‘Iqbal’ another low budget film by the talented Nagesh Kukunoor gave the message clear that the Indian audience is now in the mood of some experimentation. Produced under the banner of Mukta Arts, the film was acclaimed by the critics, film fraternity and the trade.

Salman in spite of his controversial links with the underworld proved that he has a strong fan following when his film ‘Maine Pyaar Kyon Kiya’ released at that hour proved to be a garner. The film was withdrawn from many places due to the controversy, otherwise it would have done better business. The film was made for Rs 12 crore and fetched Rs 18 crore.

‘Kalyug’ from the Bhatt camp was a hit, in spite of being made in a low budget and a low profile star cast. The film had in the lead child artiste Kunal Khemu, Deepal Shaw and Bhatt’s favourite Emraan Hashmi. The film did good business.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Black’ just took Bollywood by storm with the magnificent direction, acting by Amitabh and Rani and the novel script. Though the film fetched acclaims all over and was appreciated by one and all, it couldn’t get the box office ringing.

Some of the films that did average business and were not complete downers were Dus, Kaal, Bluffmaster, Paheli, Apaharan and Dosti.

Um, what? Why is the "best" being equated with what made the most money?
