War in the summer of 1947. The frontier between India and Pakistan has become the scene of rioting and bloodshed, but in sleepy Mano Majra, Sikhs and Muslims have always lived peaceably together. A murder, however, can change all that in an instant. Too bad for Juggut Singh, a Sikh, that he has a reputation as a gangster.

Too bad also for the Muslim girl with whom he is having a clandestine affair when murderous suspicion falls upon Juggut, and the already mounting tension grows between Sikhs and Muslims. So, what are the authorities to do when two separate trains arrive full of dead Hindus and Sikhs?

Calcutta-born Director Pamela Rooks finds herself in very familiar territory, having a Hindu father and a Sikh mother. It is no wonder then how she creates an impressive adaptation of Khushwant Singh's best-selling novel, chronicling a climactic period in Indian history. Adeptly mixing some very tender humor with powerful drama, Rooks masterfully captures the atmosphere and psychology of a momentous time.

Run Time: 107 minutes, Dual Layer, widescreen! Interlaced crap. DVD is plagued with all sort of problems! Dolby Digital 5.1? lousy with annoying sound drop out! Sexual content and nudity! I enjoyed this movie, a different twist to the parition tale! Good performances by Mohan Agashe and Nirmal Pandey! Rajit Kapur's character wasn't fully developed, and only served as distraction to the tension of the sleepy little village, maybe it was intended by the author? Nothing much on his performance as compared to "The Horse of the Seventh Sun" or the " Making of the Mahatma" where his acting abilites were showcased, and to top it off he had to suffer the indignity of baring his rear-end. He should have passed on this role.

I just hate how all these kinds of movies always habe Muslim girl with non muslim boy as the theme with the exception of Pinjaar which was based on a true story.
Seems that Indians has to resort to Fiction to portray their agenda.

So like what's your story that made you bitter and full of resentment? You didn’t get dump by an Indian did ya? :bash:

If the man was a Muslim, then it would be considered by some that it is the Muslim who is dominant in the relationship, but its relatively "safe" and not as controversial to show the Muslim as the girl in the relationship in an Indian film. It would be interesting to see a film go the other way, with a Muslim man and a Hindu woman.

I didn't find PINJAR that great. It was good, yes, but very melodramatic also.
