Bollywood cinema is finally taking steps to make movies with well-filmed, choreographed fight scenes. I'm tired of watching the typical fight scene with 10 men kicking one person on the ground with the cheesy out-of-sync audio sound effects. This has got to stop. Fortunately, there have been some recent Bollywood movies and/or movies featuring Bollywood actors in some kick-ass, well-choreographed fight scenes, which stand up well to post-Matrix fight scene expectations.
I haven't seen too many Bollywood movies as others in here, but I would like other people to chip in to this thread with any movies you have discovered or upcoming movies with Bollywood stars involved in kick-ass, well-choreographed fight scenes.
The following is a short list from the good to best fight scenes that I have ever watched involving Bollywood actors:
5. LAJJA: Ajay Devgan versus gang of thugs
This was one of the earliest (just 5 years ago) Bollywood movies I've seen with one scene of pretty good fight choreography. I had seen a large share of crap fight scenes until I saw Ajay Devgan take out a gang of thugs with his floppy sword. I was unexpectedly pleased with that swordplay scene - although it was on the borderline of being cheesy. But it actually was a pretty decent scene overall.
4. MAIN HOON NA: Shahrukh Khan versus Suniel Shetty
Surprisingly directed by a woman, Farah Khan (the Katherine Bigelow of India), this movie had some good bullet-time Matrix special effects and a climactic fight scene with Shahruk versus Suniel in a direct knock-off fight scene in BLADE 2. The final fight was on the borderline of being cheesy but a lot better than past Bollywood fight scenes. Sure, it was a direct copy of the last fight of BLADE 2, but hey, it's better than nothing. Allan Amin was involved with the stunt/fight choreography as he was in the following movie, MISSION KASHMIR.
3. MISSION KASHMIR: Hrithik Roshan versus Sanjay Dutt
What an awesome climax in this movie! Besides the whole movie being spectacularly filmed with some good Ramboesque sequences, the final fight scene between Hrithik versus Sanjay was creative and well-choreographed. I say creative because there actually wasn't that much punching. It was mainly a lot of slow motion, pushing around in a small old wooden hut with wood flying apart all over the place. But it was filmed in such an aesthically-pleasing and intense way that it has to be seen to be appreciated.
2. ANNIYAN: Chiyaan Vikram versus gang of thugs/martial arts students
Shankar's Anniyan is the first Bollywood movie with kick-ass martial arts scenes. They could have been polished up a bit, but overall, this movie is the first Indian (Tamil) Martial Arts movie. The movie had some original martial arts scenes, bullet-time, and well-choreographed fight scenes, but it also stole a lot from MATRIX RELOADED. Either way, it's highly entertaining!
1. THE MYTH: Mallika Sherawat versus gang of Indian policemen
Bravo Mallika! She may not be India's best actress, but she pulled off the best martial arts, wire-fu scene ever for a Bollywood actor. Choreographed by Jackie Chan, she pulled off the most graceful fung-fu scene ever. It was short, but quality is better than quantity and she pulled it off well. Wire-fu is not that easy. I've seen bad wire-fu, but she did an excellent job and she did some amazingly choreographed kung fu scenes. It's too bad she didn't do it in a Bollywood movie. But that's what Mallika Sherawat is all about - Being different from the Bollywood norm.
So, that's all I've seen with some impressive fight scenes. I'm looking forward to Hrithik Roshan's KRRISH, sequel to KOI MIL GAYA, currently training with Siu-Tung Ching of HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS fame. Im also looking forward to Bollywood remake of Korea's OLDBOY called ZINDA directed by Sanjay Gupta. I'm not sure, but I think it will have a Hong Kong action choreographer. I also heard some rumor of Yeun Woo Ping doing action choreography for a Bollywood movie. Im not sure if it is for ZINDA or for some other movie. I'll try and find out where I read that...
