I really want to get these 2 dvds. I read some old posts about them, and just want to clarify something, because most likely i think i'm gonna end up with EROS/b4u versions. I saw that eros/b4u version of Deewaar is not all that bad when compared to dei/eros? And, Sholay, i know eros/b4u is the director's cut, but is it worth buying if u can't get the dei/eros version? Or am I better off trying to find dei/eros verison? someone please advise. thanks

Better go with both DEi version, atleast none of there DVDs will rot inside your DVD player, non of which I've alteast experienced from DEi DVDs. Stay as far away from pure Eros DVDs as long as you have some sort of alternative.

Wow, in my experience, just about all DEI DVDs rot...soon. I mean, I love their transfers, but damn if their discs last a month.

i think B4U/EROS sholay is best. It has full directors cut length,and original aspect ratio as filmed. (not cropped into widecreen like DEI) also according to review, DEI have not shown the full width anyway! Only sound is good on DEI. Picture is good but lacks detail like EROS/B4U.

AND YES.... DEEWAAR by DEI/EROS kicks ass!

ERos/b4u version isnt re-mastered. It has spots and blemishes with picture. Also jumps with important scenes. (just compare the scene where Big B asks Shashi to get "the signature": ("pehle uss aadmi ka sign leke aao...!)

I, too, prefer the Eros version of Sholay to the DEI one, but do so only marginally. The picture and sound are significantly better on DEI copy, Eros's having horribly washed-out colors and an audio track plagued by hissing, crackling, and popping. I do, however, like that Eros gives you the longer cut of the film, and that it presents the movie in the aspect ratio in which it was filmed. (Although, watching the film in theaters, you would not have seen as much as you do with Eros's copy; the film was shown through a 2.35:1 matte. As we all know, it's not just about seeing the "most you can"; often, it's about what's left out of a frame. That said, I don't think that the extra viewing-space of Eros's DVD in any way takes away from the film.) Personally, I think that neither DVD comes close to doing justice to Sholay, not to mention that neither cares to include one freaking "bonus feature."

As for Deewaar (1975), the print of my Eros copy is just excellent (as is the sound). At one time, I was able to borrow a DEI copy, for comparative purposes, and found absolutely no difference between the two; even the menus were identical. (Though, of course, the Eros version did not have the DEI logo pop up after "play" was pressed.) Though there are, again, no "special features" of which to speak, on either DVD, the stellar transfer makes up for the void. Perhaps, in this case, there are two versions of an "Eros" DVD" out there, and it's a matter of chance which you happen to get. In my case, I got the good one. :-D

maybe eros used the DEI transfer later for their own label release, because the DEI menu has sound and video, and eros one i saw was static in menu.

your right commando, maybe you were lucky

Same with Trishul, eros one is so rubbish compared to eros /DEI.

My Eros copy of Deewaar indeed has animated menus. The main menu begins as a wall, with the Deewaar theme music, then goes into the buttons that may be clicked ("play movie," "chapters," etc.). I've never seen the "static-menu" version of which you speak. Of course, I own Trishul (Eros/DEI), as well, and the print is just superb (though the film used for the transfer, is in horrible condition during the first 10 mins. or so). The picture is sharp, and the colors vibrant; and the audio is free from any hissing, coming through clear and strong. Again, the menus are animated. I have Sharaabi (Eros/DEI), too, and the case is the same (excellent DVD). As a matter of fact, the original aspect-ratio is preserved until the opening credits end, and even thereafter, it's not too cropped. I used to own the Eros DVD of Laawaris, and I found that the picture was soft and dark, though the sound was OK; this all was before I knew anything about DEI vs. Eros, etc. (I just figured "Eros"=not-bootlegged; buy from them). I never understood why zulm.net spoke so well of the transfer, nor did I get why my menus looked different. Finally, having read about Eros/B4U as opposed to Eros/DEI, I managed to get hold of the Eros/DEI version, and I couldn't have been (and couldn't be) happier. If only Eros/DEI were still going; great transfers, with discs that last more than a week. Man, what the hell is wrong with the Indian DVD market? "Zulm" is right.

There's a thread from April 2001 on the old forums which discussed Deewaar DVDs;

http://www.zulm.net/of/showthread.php?threadid=398

... I used to own 3 different versions at one time. Original DEI/Eros DVD which still stands as being the best copy out there. Eros/B4U 'mk1' - which is an extract replica of the Eros/DEI DVD but has B4U branding on it and another Eros/B4U 'mk2' with poorer video and sound quality compared to Eros/DEI DVD - this is the version that had redesigned menus.

I never found DEI/EROS Deewaar so I settled with EROS/B4U version. It's not all that bad, though the image is soft and it's blurry when the camera is in motion. But, since this is the only EROS/B4U disc I own, it doesn't really hurt me that much...hehe. As for Sholay, I ended up just downloading the dvdr, ripped from DEI/EROS version. Since the DEI disc wasn't all that great to begin with, I guess it's allright. But, if I ever come across DEI/EROS versions, I will buy both.

I have a DEI Rangeela disc that doesn't change to second layer. How long do they take to replace it? What are the procedures? Do I need to call them up?

Why is the Eros/DEI one better than the "mk1" if both are identical barring the fact that the latter has "B4U" on its cover?
