Experiment phase 2:
Well, the experiment continues, and even if Lagaan hasn’t won an Oscar, the legacy still continues. The goal of this experiment is to be an individual contributor towards international recognition.
This time, two more subjects were exposed to this film. One is a friend of mine, who we shall call Lindsey, and the other is my English professor, who we shall call English Prof.
Lindsey – Basically a newly acquainted friend. I asked her if she’d see a movie if I recommended it, and she said yes. That worked out well enough. There were no pre-hand reactions or previous experiences.
Potential for liking: 6/10
English Prof – He complained that he hadn’t seen a good film in a long time, so I just recommended this and lent the DVD. He has a pretty big interest in Indian culture, specifically Hinduism, so I thought it’d be interesting to show it to him
Potential for liking: 7.5/10
This section is going to be a lot shorter, as I didn’t get to see the film with either of the people. Simply put, here were their individual reactions.
Lindsey felt the movie was great. She absolutely loved everything about it. In particular she liked the songs and dances, and, to her, it was something very different, and very well-done. She like the production values, including costumes, make-up, cinematography, etc.
English Prof liked the movie. He thought the beginning portion was absolutely charming. He really liked the love story the best, especially the parallel drawn between Bhuvan-Gauri and Krishna-Radha. He enjoyed the music and described it as being quite pleasant. However, as for the cricket match, he felt it was a bit too long, and contained too many plot twists. But, overall, he still really enjoyed it, and thanked me for recommending it to him.
