Recently got hold of DHOOM and K3G VCDs.

My Comments:

Recall, DHOOM DVD is PAL to NTSC converted Field Averaged. It gives combing in every frame using "Force Weave" option in "Power DVD".

DHOOM VCD is in PAL and gives no combing (as expected) using Force Weave in Power DVD.

Still, DVD PQ is better as a "low bit rate low res" VCD can't really compete with DVD, even though the DVD is PAL to NTSC converted field averaged.

Orig VCD might very well be better than 2in1 or multi-in-1 pirates though.

K3G DVD is Progressive and gives no combing using Force Weave in Power DVD.
K3G VCD too gave no combing in Force Weave in Power DVD.

Of course, Progressive DVD PQ is a lot better than VCD.

But, a surprise/ mystery??

Using Power DVD Video information button gives the following info:


But, it really is not PAL but NTSC. Neither my DVD player nor my TV can handle PAL and yet it played this VCD. Then I counted # of steps in 1 sec. It was 24, not 25 for PAL or 30 for NTSC.

Now, the question is:
Whether Power "DVD info" button gives the info whatever was typed in or it gives info whatever it discovers in the video stream??

I would have assumed that it displays whatever it discovers from video stream, but it seems to display whatever was typed in. In that case we can't trust it, like in this case.

I don't know how the info is stored on VCD.
But, on DVD, this info is stored in *.IFO (VIDEO_TS.IFO, VTS_01.IFO etc.) files. I think PowerDVD displays the info from these files.

Last year, my friend went to India and got some of his camcorder VHS converted to DVDs. The guy in India converted them to PAL DVDs. I was not able to play these PAL DVDs in my stand-alone DVD player here in US.
Then, I edited VIDEO_TS.IFO file (changed the info from PAL to NTSC) using IFOEdit software and I was able to play it in my stand-alone DVD player.

WOW. Miracle do happens!

It's not a miracle.
Just making a dvd player fool as some NTSC dvd players has capabality to read PAL dvds.

K3G is progressive? since when? the yash raj dvd??

These dvds from Yashraj (K3G, DDLJ, Mohabbatein, Kaal & Meenaxi) are progressive.

And Zubeidaa.

DDLJ and Kaal are progressive?

Other YRF DVDs that are Progressive are:

KKHH, First release non-anamorphic, as well as, later anamorphic release.

DTPH second release that was Progressive as well as anamorphic. Initial release was letterboxed and interlaced.

Hari Bhari (I think it's YRF)

There may be a few other ones too. All authored by SD.

(I haven't seen YRF Kaal yet and hence not sure whether it's Prog. But, YRF DDLJ for sure is Progressive).

Checked confirmed, KAAL as well as, MEENAXI DVDs are Progressive.
