Looks decent. Whites are a little blown out in some of those caps, but colors and sharpness seem to be good.

But they could have 16:9 enhanced the picture, even if it is 1.66:1.

damn them, idiots, why did they go back to their cropping techninque!

What happened to "Kannae Kalaimanae" song. It is not in Sadma. Is it in different movie? .

The song is definitely from the tamil version of Sadma. Kamal sings it to Sridevi.

Haven't seen this film, but "Kannae Kalaimanae" song is in Raaja's Musical Journey in Hindi :)

thanks for the shots. yet another crappy dvd on the racks!

Yeah the shemaroo version seems to be the better one - the BE seems to have too much contrast boosting ( which should throw off the colours) , seems to have more grain also.

BTW - what is the OAR of this film - is it 1.33 ?? - how do you guys figure out OAR for a film - is there a website that list's OAR ??

God, cant seem to understand the logic behind cropping & aspect manipulation ! Image

This film was 1.85:1 and first shemaroo kindly cropped it in older DEI style and then BEI I dont know what the heck on the earth, did with this dvd and from what source?

They could have easily come up with anamorphic, keeping 1.85:1 AR DVD! but well.. rule!

I haven't seen a movie like that.It is a special movie that will attract every sensible person. If you see this movie,a sad feeling will come in your heart.I will advise those who have not a strong heart that they should not see this movie. The end is so sad that all the night , you will think about the movie. The performance of Kamal Hassan and Sri Devi is outstanding.

Moondram Pirai" was the original Tamil film that because of its success was dubbed in Hindi as "Sadma" [1983]. The films marked Sridevi's first serious adult role and she states that of all her films (she has made over 270) "Moondram Pirai" is the one she is most proud of. She won the National Film Award for Best Actress for "Moondram Pirai" and was nominated for Filmfare Best Actress Award for "Sadma".

The film truly has an unusual plot. Sridevi plays a girl who because of an accident loses her memory and has the mind of a ten year old child. Through devious circumstances she is sold into prostitution but is saved by a kind hearted teacher (played by Kamal Hasan) who takes her to the country in order to protect her. Eventually the teacher falls in love with Sridevi, she regains her memory up until the time of her accident and has no recollection of the teacher or his kindness...

The film itself is uneven and was made on what looks like a very low budget, however the acting by the lead actors raises the movie to near classic status. To witness Sridevi, the squeaky voiced 'sex-bomb' of countless masala films play the role of a person with the mind of a 10 year old is one of the incredible performances of Indian cinema and Kamal Hasan by the end of the film acts out one of the most gut wrenchingly sad scenes ever put on celluloid. This movie is an absolute must see for any fan of Sridevi.

Sridevi did not win the national award for Moonram Pirai. Kamal Hassan won the Best Actor National Award in 1982 for Moonram Pirai.
The national awards for 1982 went to Kamal Hssan (Moonram Pirai) and Shabana Azmi (Arth)
The national awards for 1983 went to Om Puri (Ardh Satya) and Shabana Azmi (Khandhar)

A question about the movie: Do people really act like 10 year olds like Sridevi did in her situation? That part seemed kind of farfetched to me.

The last scene with the train is very touching and sad.

whatever!! yaar!! please do not try to undermine, one of the best film done in bollywood history, with forward vision, and unsurpassed talent!and limited budget and sincere sentiments!

I have not ever seen one single individual, from any background, or age, who came across this film and was left unmoved or not liking it!! 8)

I wish I would be able to relish it for rest of my life at least a minimally proper done dvd  damn curse to BEI or any one else involved in this corruption!

OK arsh lets put things in the right perspective! I can see you're hopping mad about the authoring of this DVD, but I failed to understand who what you are peeved about, is it that you expected a better transfer from BEI. Imho, they did a better job comparing to some of their recent work. In comparison to shemaroo and given the obvious cropping and color dropout how else is it inferior? My eyes may not be as good as yours neither my prowess as a DVD guru can match your skills, but I can clearly see BEI is sharper than shemaroo! Maybe you ought to realize that Bollywood has it's limitations! Like you said Sadma may never get the teatment it deserves!
