Salman and dons: CM promises inquiry

July 14, 2005 19:51 IST

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has said an inquiry will be conducted into allegations that Bollywood actor Salman Khan had threatened actress Aishwarya Rai with 'dire consequences' if she failed to attend specific events linked to the underworld.

Deshmukh assured the legislative assembly on Thursday that he would make a statement on the issue.

Opposition members demanded that Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act be applied against Salman for his alleged links with the underworld.

The Bharatiya Janata Party's Gopinath Munde, who raised the issue in the assembly through an adjournment motion, said the Mumbai police had in their possession tapes of the mobile phone conversation between Salman and Aishwarya in which the actor had threatened her.

In the tape, transcripts of which were published in the Hindustan Times on Thursday, Salman allegedly threatened Aishwarya saying `the underworld keeps tabs on you whenever you are abroad'. Salman is also purportedly quoted as telling Aishwarya that he knew about the Mumbai blasts in advance and that he had links with Dawood Ibrahim.

"Such open threats in broad daylight reflect badly on the law and order situation," BJP legislator Eknath Khadse said.

"The police has taken note of the issue. A statement will be made on the issue after an inquiry," the chief minister said.

"The Aishwarya issue is a welcome change for me going by the tense situation during the last few days," Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar said. It was an apparent reference to the churning in the Shiv Sena legislature group and the crisis in the House over that.

At first, during the Vivek incident, I was against Salman's shenanigans. Now that I see some political conjunction into play, I'm now skeptical about the whole matter. Could Salman be a target of an extremist pressure group? (Sanjay, I seek your opinion here).

The audio tapes revealed recently, if true, show Salman to be quite the spoilt brat that I always thought he was and the fact that he incriminates himself by talking about his influence with the underworld to some extent does justify atleast an investigation. But still I can't help but think that there is atleast some religious prejudice playing a role here clubbed with the dirty religious politics of parties like BJP, Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena, VHP, RSS etc The investigation into Salman's links with the underworld would be totally justified, but the anti Salman demonstrations and the totally illegal stoppage of the screening of Salman's new film is totally ridiculous and another sign of how are country is going to the dogs. Civil liberties and freedom of speech are being trampled upon for political gains.

On a personal note, a couple of weeks ago there was a FAILED terrorist attack on the 'Ram Janm bhoomi' grounds, 'failed' being the key word, although that in itself should also not matter in my story. Anyhow, the day after the failed attack, BJP called for a 'Bandh' to protest, against what, I still have not figured out myself. The Bandh was pretty much a total failure except in Madhya Pradesh, where the BJP is in power and thus they control the administration. I have a Petrol Pump (Gas Station) in Indore, which is in Madhya Pradesh and due to the fear of violence by BJP 'goondas' we had closed the petrol pump, considering that even the police had told us that we should close down to prevent violence. But inspite of us being closed, a mob of over 200 BJP 'goondas' attacked my petrol pump and smashed the dispensing units, windows, chairs , tables basically any and everything they could lay their hands upon. Bottom line, nothing makes sense in this country anymore, atleast not when it comes to religious and political groups/parties, specially when the two are but the same as in the case of BJP.

Feel bad for you Sanjay - so much for India Shining

EDIT: After reading a report I now pretty much believe it is religiously motivated - so much for a secular country (were we ever truly secular - what the hell does that even mean ??). As much as i loath that guy ( still cannot belive he got away in the "hit-and-run" case :x ) , this sucks

Thanks for your response Sanjay. And I'm sorry to hear about your petrol pump incident. And if I may ask, why exactly would these BJP goondas do this? I'm really curious to know, since I have family myself in India that own one petrol pump in Punjab. Were these people specifically after your pump or was it because your pump is located in a district area to which they had a conflict with? Or was it entirely something else?

Actually I have no idea why my pump was attacked in particular. The only thing that I can think of is that it may be to make an example of someone to instill fear amongst the others. By the way there was one more pump in the city other than mine, that was also attacked and if memory serves me correctly, there have been similar attacks on other pumps in the past during bandhs called by the BJP.

Aish says this is not her voice in the tapes. Now it clearly proves that salman is innocent. This is a personal attack on salman khan. The person behind this should be found and bring to justice.

the BJP are a bunch of racest idiots ( religious ) and it does not make sense after 4yrs do you think that they would release it a day before his most anticipated movie of the year? and i dont think ash would have kept this inside for so long to so i think its totally fake, even if you check out the pic with the underworld guy in it his face is way brighter then his arms and there is a thin black line around the edges of his face, no offence to anyone but i still think india is pretty corrupt in the religious prejudice thing, i dont think anyone liked salman at all, since he didnt win an award for maine pyar kia, and especially hum apke hai kaun! and the supporting award for kkhh was rumored that srk said he wouldnt pick his award if salman doesnt get one, the only way i see them giving it to srk is that if they dont everyone will know is all favoured ( most ppl know it anyway) and whats up with the ppl recking the cinema halls, and posters and stuff like get a life he gets paid either way, god these ppl who are protesting (violently_ for basiclly no reason are totally not civilized

Maharashtra Home Minister Says Original Salman-Aishwarya Tapes Destroyed
By: Abid

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Wednesday, Maharashtra's Home Minister R.R. Patil told the state assembly that in 2001, there were regular phone conversations between Dawood aide Abu Salem and a number traced to the actor. This led the Bombay police to tap Salman's phone line. The statement comes after the Mumbai police have consistently refused to confirm if the tapes were one of their own.According to sources , the state government has ordered a detailed inquiry into the tapes and the tape containing the alleged conversation between Salman and Aishwarya and the voice samples collected have been sent to a forensic lab in Chandigarh for testing, a process that sources say may take as long as two weeks.

However , in a bizarre turn of events ( according to a leading news channel) the same minister added (later in the day) that the original audio tapes mentioned above have been destroyed . More details are awaited .
