Is this a popular award? Saif's performance was fine for the role, but it wasn't anything groundbreaking.

I didn't think the cinematography of Swades was anything special.

At least Saif will stop bitching about how he wasn't nominated for Best Actor at Filmfare and instead got a consolation prize as Best Comedienne.

There is a consistent pattern of rigging and influence!

Whether it is Anil Kapoor for Pukar! Raveena for Daman, Karisma for DTPH and Now mother of all !! Saif for nothing else but HUM TUM!!

Can you justify your remarks

I dont have to. Rather whoever gave the award has to justify the award for Saif.

Here is their justification:

Sharmila helped Saif win award?'

Onkar Singh in New Delhi | July 13, 2005 18:34 IST

Did Sharmila Tagore, chairperson, Censor Board of India, twist the National Film Awards jury's arm and spin the Best Actor award for her son Saif Ali Khan for his performance in Hum Tum?

Sudhir Mishra, who headed the 17-member jury, handled this bouncer at a press conference in Delhi by saying, "We are ready to defend the our decision. His acting is better and has improved a lot."

"It is you who has brought up the issue of mother and son. We did not think about it at all," singer and jury member Preeti Sagar added.
Saif, Tara bag National Awards

She said Saif had done a wonderful job in the film and it was not necessary to give an award to a 'heavy' performance all the time. "We tried to be different this time," she said.

Many who have seen Hum Tum thought the argument to justify the film was outrageous. "Saif's acting is average but certainly not worth an award," a senior scribe said.

On the controversial decision to give a joint award to Yash Chopra's Veer-Zaara and Cheran's Tamil film Autograph, Sagar said both the films were wonderful, and that filmmakers outside Hindi cinema also needed to be encouraged.

**BTW!! Can we find out, who were competing with MAHA PURUSH Saif for BEST ACTOR NATIONAL??? Now Johny Lever should be hopeful too!

Wow!!! Saif Ali Khan has a National Award. I have to let that sink in for awhile. Okay, now my thoughts...

Here's the thing. Whether Saif deserved the best actor award or not should be up for debate. But as we all know by its long history, the National Awards have never, NEVER awarded an actor with a comedic performance. They have totally neglected every brilliant comedic performer like Mohanlal, Kamal Hassan (when he wants to be), etc.,. Reflecting upon it in this manner and simultaneously acknowleding what a phenomenal comedic talent Saif Ali Khan is, the National Awards probably realised it's about time they awarded a brilliant comedic performance as well. This, I believe, is the first time the NA has awarded a comedic performance. Hollywood does it once in a while with the Oscars like Jack Nicholson winning it for "As Good As it Gets". I would have also wanted Saif to win for his stellar work in EHT but I'm not upset that he won for "Hum Tum". As I stated before in an old review of "Hum Tum", there is no (commercial) lead actor working today who possess the comedic talent that Saif Ali Khan possesses. When people like Karishma, Anil Kapoor and Raveena won for their films, it was disturbing. They didn't deserve those awards, for their respective films, at all. All substandard performances. Saif, I felt, really worked hard to provide a lasting impression for the substandard "Hum Tum".

As for the so-called corruption, I think Sharmila Tagore has a few other problems to worry about than calling in favors to give her son the award. Her husband just went to jail for breaking the law so why would she taint her reputation even further with this stunt? I don't believe it for a second. And for the record, Tagore was NOT a part of the National Award jury. Sudhir Mishra, Nagesh Kukonoor, Sandeep Sawant (director of "Shwaas"), and several other reputed critics made up the jury. They are responsible for Saif attaining the best actor award. On a different note, what a distressing year it has been for Saif Ali Khan. First he divorces his wife and can't see his children, then his father goes to jail and now he'll face a horrible backlash for the best actor award for "Hum Tum". I feel sorry for him.

P.S. - Is this the first time a Khan has won a NA in the lead actor role? I know Aamir has won a special mention for "Raakh" but that's it, right? Can anyone inform me otherwise?

I would not rate Jack's brilliant performance in AS GOOD AS IT GETS! as comic act of Robin William, Jim Carey!!

I can rate Saif as good as Carey, but he can not even touch Jack's feets mud! I guess!!!

I would not rate AS GOOD AS IT GETS! as bhondi second hand comedy inspired from WHEN HARRY MET SALLY! called as HUM TUM!

IF he was so great why he did not win FF OR ANY OTHER CRAP either??

Why did not they award Sanju last year for MUNNA! or Kamal for CHACHI!  :?:

Arsh, I just said the NA didn't care for past comedic performances like Kamal and like Sanjay. Read my response again. I guess they are trying to change themselves as not to give awards solely for dramatic work. As any actor or director will tell you, comedy is much harder to do than drama.

And like I said, "Hum Tum" is mediocre stuff which has a first class comedic act from Saif. His comedic work in "Hum Tum" is nothing vulgar or crass. It is genuine.
