I saw Paheli last night and thought it was fine. It was cute and clean filmmaking, but not much else. I thought SRK was great though; his performance as the bewildered husband was spot-on. Rani was nice to look at, but she was constantly crying in every frame to the point of distraction.

For me, the biggest problem for me kind of has to do with what you were saying, Aarkayne. It was hard to believe this story when it was so beautiful, littered with stars and entrenched in a sort of "movie world". I could enjoy the film on a superficial/entertainment level, but not for one second could I invest myself in the story. Another issue was that the magic/supernatural elements were presented too obviously, making it all seem hokey.

Love the songs. Wouldn't mind watching it again.

Can you elaborate ? - is the subject or the style that is avant garde-ish

I would say the subject is though based on an old folk tale which would be a paradox of sorts!!!! The style attempts to be that too but in a very half-baked fashion....its neither here nor there.......to me Jabbar Patel was an avant garde sort of film maker....he had made a movie called JAIT RE JAIT (Marathi....if you get the DVD/VCD do catch it).....its about the fight a tribal man has with elements around him including killer bees.....and the story's sutradhar were a pair of singing mendicant types (if i remember it right).....now that was a nice devise.....PAHELI chickens out....it neither goes full length nor does it quite explain things.......without giving it out too much about the film there are these characters 'played' by Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak that makes me feel that's what Palekar wanted to achieve

SRK's PAHELI had mega US Dollar collections in the first weekend of its release.

It's a whopping $ 632,000 for the first weekend from US theatres. Theatre Average is $ 9300 per theatre.

Next Weekend being a long 4th July weekend in the US, is Paheli going to break previous US collections records for a Hindi film??

It's just a simple folktale, yaar. I think you are taking it too seriously.

Yes, the puppet voiceovers are by Naseeruddin Shah and his wife Ratna Pathak Shah.

My take on the movie, it is better than most of the crap put out by Bollywood, but still could have done with better direction and better music.
7 out of 10 stars.

PS: The swoosh sound effects are not only annoying and too loud but also made the movie seem like a cheap kiddies film. By the way the kids in the theater did seem to get a kick during the 'swoosh' scenes.

Did anyone gather any allegorical content from the movie ?, as simple as they look, folktales ( Indian, Chinese, Buddhist fables etc.) have strong metaphors - usually about human relationships. Having neither read Duvidha nor seen Kual's original I cant comment on it. But I have a feeling its there to 'be seen'. Anyone ?

Paheli' doesn't work in India!

By Our Correspondent ©2005 Bollyvista.com

Despite a small section of the trade trying to don the PRO cap and saying that 'Paheli' would fare well in India, clearly, the SRK-Rani starrer has not lived up to expectations. Both critically and commercially.

Yes, in the UK and US it has taken a great opening, but smart ol'India is not impressed. The film will go down as a flop on home turf. Proven again, SRK can work wonders with the Dharma-Yashraj camp. Else...

Watched "Paheli" the other night. It took me some time to figure out if it was coming from a digital intermediate or not. It did not look like coming from the camera negative. It was not sharp enough. But it also did not have much digital artifacts. The English subtitles looked not lasered but digitally added. When some noise reduction was visible in some shots it became a certainty: digital intemediate. But a pretty nice one. And some of the special effects were Hollywood quality. The best effects I have seen so far in a Bollywood film together with some in "Lakshya". The HD of this film will look very good when made from the DI.

My 2 cents on PAHELI theatrical viewing:

Picture Quality was excellent. (Not like colored Mughleazam or Devdas in 3 of 4 screening that I saw).

Film was colorfull but found it a bit slow and boring. Despite that, it's a memorable film. Film is slow, but that's what this film, as per it's style, is supposed to be. Kids liked it as they were intrigued by the Ghost. It was screening in the biggest theatre in the multiplex that was not Dolby Digital (smaller theatre is DD). Despite playing in back up audio, there was plenty of subwoofer effect. A full fledged dolby digital presentation sure will add a lot of spice to special effects.
I liked the ending. Great. I could not have thought of this, but makes perfect sense.

I was disappointed to see my favourite Sukhvinder song only in the end credits, in a small window. I hope I can get a full screen video of that song in due time.
