One of the greatest actors ever is no more.

Amrish Puri dies of brain haemorrhage

Mumbai, January 12
Bollywood actor Amrish Puri passed away in a hospital here on Wednesday morning after a brain haemorrhage. He was 72.

Sources said Puri had fallen at his home last week, which resulted in a blood clot in the brain. He had undergone surgery to remove the clot. He was already under treatment for malaria when he slipped into a coma from which he never recovered.

The funeral was likely to take place on Thursday, sources said.

The Mogambo of Indian cinema was born on June 22, 1932, and made his Bollywood debut in 1971 with Reshma Aur Shera after several years as a theatre and advertising personality.

He was popular as a “voice” in several radio and film commercials before Bollywood beckoned.

The actor, who straddled the worlds of art and commercial cinema with ease, did a number of memorable roles in art house films like Nishaant, Manthan and Bhumika. However, he is best known for his role as the comic-book villain, Mogambo, in Boney Kapoor’s Mr India.

He went on to do roles in Hollywood movies like Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Gandhi.

His last film was Mujhse Shaadi Karogi with Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor.

Amrish Puri is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter

I remember meeting Amrish Puri as a child. My father had taken me to a screening of KAADU (his debut movie incidently in which he played the lead and was directed by Girish Karnad). Till then Puri was mainly a stage personality. To the wisp of a child that I was, he seemed such an imposing personality, which he was in every which way...I was mainly scared that he would ask me how I had managed to see a film that was rated 'Adults Only' inspite of being a child....such had been the impact of his role in the movie, on a child's mind....i am sure he would have liked to hear of that one !

One of the most memorable roles for me personally was the one he played in MOHABBAT (Anil Kapoor-Vijeyta starrer)....also liked him as the airforce trainer in VIJEYTA.....they dont make actors like this anymore...may his soul rest in peace.

Let me first express my deeepest condolences to the Puri family for such a tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Today is a sad day for Indian cinema. What we have lost is beyond any words. A great actor along the lines of Amithab Bachan in his later years. I would not have been so sad if it were the demise of the current class of idiots such as Vivek Oberio, Hithrik Roshan or any of the shorty Khans.
