In various posts lots of DVDs have been mentioned that don't play any more due to disc rot.

With the DVD FAB and other programs it has been possible to back up DVDs on to Hard Drive or on to recordable DVDs. It's worthwhile recording only those DVDs that last less than 2 Yrs as the recordable DVDs are expected to last about 2 Yrs as speculated/ mentioned in one of the posts. Moreover, it's not possible to back up all our DVD collection in a time frame of 2 Yrs. Only the DVDs deserving to be backed up should be backed up.

It'll be nice to suggest the DVDs that deserve backing up. Various factors are of consideration:

1) Many older releases were better and not available any more.

2) If new DVD is on cheap media, expected to rot soon (example EROS's Main Hoon Naa that doesn't play even new)

3) A DVD that is your prize collection that you do't want to take a chance of future disc rot or damage.

4) May be you want a title in your collection and don't want to buy it again after the disc rots.

5) You come across a DVD where it has just started giving trouble in play back. It can be backed up at this time (with minimum errors) as it will keep on getting worst and eventually won't play at all.
Example: one DVD that was not possible to play in reg DVD players, was able to back up with DVD FAB set to ignore reading erors. It resulted in over 64000 blocks with error but affected just 10 min where picture was pixelated at times. Other DVDs backed up with less than 2000 def blocks.

6) Any other reason---.

As and when you come across a rotted disc or can think of DVDs that deserve to be backed up, please post in this thread.

Thanks.

Okay... Agar Tum Na Hote doesnt work anymore.... I guess it needs a backup.

So guys, if you have this dvd please check it up. I am referring to the DEI version and not the BEI version. If it doesnt work, ask DEI / BEI for an exchange

back up/replacement include:

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam-DEI (noticed one skipping problem)

Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai- DEI (skips at one point)

BEI will replace old faulty DEI DVDs for new BEI versions, provided you return the faulty discs only to them.

Okay guys here is a warning...
Please check all your
"DEI-Classics forever" collection...
The ones in which no spindle is present. (Jaanwar (Shammi Kapoor) is an exception as it has a central spindle and also the "DEI Classics Forever"...)

The latest dvd in that series that needed backing :-

Mili ,
Saheb Bibi aur Ghulam &
Aandhi

I presume all of them will need replacing :(

The reason DEI discs have been mentioned so far, must be due to a certain criteria, not that they are the wrost ones. I would rather back up/ get replacements for well authored DVDs first befor attemting crap DVDs. Much higher percentage rotting DVDs belong to other DVD makers. Media Dimension @ 100%. As long as DEI had association with India Plaza, they were on reliable Gold Media and these don't rot.

sknath, please clarify.

So far, did not have a chance to check non DEI/BEI DVDs as DEI/BEI and other progressive DVDs are my priority. (So far have checked only about 20% of my DEI/BEI DVDs.)

EROS-DILLAGI (Deol's):
Last night I rented Deol brothers' DILLAGI (EROS) DVD. It was original/ genuine EROS. It was on silverish/ goldish media (as I call it, it's 40% gold; it was more goldish than Indian DVDs available today). It freezes from 2nd layer. Just runs for about 70 min on my most forgiving DVD player.

My Dillagi EROS DVD with silver/gold media
does not have any freezing problems.

Let's hope that my Dillagi DVD was an odd case. Looking carefully, it may very well be a mechanical defect. It has some deep gouges along the outer rim.

On another note, I wonder if any one came across this situation:

Dhoom CD. Not sure whether it's an original or a pirate?? It has all the markings of an original YRF release, but the price my wife paid, makes it suspicious.
Its silvery layer (top side; once the silver layer is gone, it's clear plastic underneath) is peeling off like silver foil from Indian sweets. This flaking is so bad that I have discarded this CD so as not to risk my CD player.

Did we say
Love Ke Liye Kuchh Bhi Karega
Jodi #1
Naayak
Chhupa Rustam
Biwi # 1
Gadar
Hathkadi
Humraaz (Bobby Deol)

and tons of others.

I'm appalled to see that even new purchases of these and many other rottable discs are turning up unplayable on arrival.

May be, DVD manufacturers don't even have any master copy left to copy from. Once they figure it out, they will copy from pirates or from VHS and sell as originals.
