Adilr17 your question was answered when Sunny started this thread:

While UK and USA fans are stuck with the bogged down version of the film, a new version is now in the works.

Using Ayngaran's Boys DVD as reference Farhan Akthar is now working on a new version of Dil Chahta Hai for the Indian DVD domestic release.

Where does this information come from, Sunny? :)

If it's really true then I'm very happy as I haven't bought the DVD of DCH yet! Though it's one of my favorites. I didn't buy it because I heard there were some problems with the original.

Can anyone please explain me what is meant by 'authoring'? Does it mean transferring the film from i-don't-know-what to DVD? And what are the exact differences of a single-layered and a double-layered disc? Also.. I read people saying "PROG".. what does that mean?

I'm sorry for the many questions. I do not know what these technical stuff mean, but I'm a hardcore filmfan and I find it very important to have QUALITY DVD's of my favorite movies.

Thank you.

Thank you, Dragun. Now I hope I will understand it after reading. :keh:

In short:

Progressive:
Film is 24 frames per sec. To convert it to NTSC (60 fields per sec), each film frame is transferred into 2 fields and every 5th field is a repeat of previous one. As DVD is digital medium, instead of recording the repeated field, an instruction (flag) is given to player to repeat the previous field.

Pseudo-Progressive:
Repeat video field is un-necessarily recorded. Each video field contains info from only one film frame and hence is not blurred.

Field Averaged Interlaced (Khichdi):
Each video field contains picture information from more than one film frames. This is usually the result of Film to PAL to NTSC (and further) series of conversions, without making any attempt to keep the film frames separate. Even though, each video field is blurred (due to info from more than one image), in a moving picture, you don't see the blurred picture as eyes do the informatin averaging.

The DVD is to be released by the director and prodcuers themselfs. Rights for T-Series ran out in 2003.

I came to India couple of days back. I see 2-disk DCH dvds in the stores. When I asked the owner in one of the stores, he told me that it's new in the market and it came few days back. The MSRP printed on it is Rs. 699. By the way, I didn't see the logo in the front (rather I missed it). I saw "Sony Entertainment Television" logo on the back side. I will post about the brand info within next 24-48 hours as I don't access computer much (vacation time).

I might not buy it because of couple of reasons:
1. I am one of the few lucky guys whose Spark copy is still alive and working fine. I can tell this as I made a backup of main movie DVD on 2 dvds by splitting the movie few days before coming to India.
2. The DVD/VCD stores here in Baroda do not have TV/DVD player for testing the DVD, so they don't keep any open boxes.

It's not related DCH.
By the way, I bought 10 shemaroo DVDs - Karz, Saudagar, Arpan, Chasme Baddor, Saraswatichandra, Aap Ki Kasam, Professor, Pati Patni Aur Woh, Ek Jaan Hain Hum & Mera Saya . The printed MSRP for each DVD is Rs. 349 but I paid Rs. 310 as my brother is regular customer of this store.

so AYANGRAN will release it? Parsad with MULTI GRAIN, PROG :nopity:

keep us posted audit!!thnx

I assure you this title wont have grain as this was shot on excellent kodak neg. Then you can see that Prasad are not to blame when transfering the print.

The recent high grain in DVDs authored at Prasad is because they focus too much on keeping the picture sharper. This results in excessive grain. Softening the sharpness a bit should reduce the grain according to them.

So Spark isn't in charge of the Dil Chahta Hai DVD anymore? I bought my 2-disc set online from IndiaWeekly.com a little bit after it came out, and I think mine has disc rot problems, too. It stops playing at certain points in the movie, and it's the Spark edition. It'd be cool to know there is gonna be a new edition (playable in the U.S.) that is better quality.

According to Indiatimes web store DCH has been released recently by Sony on a 2 disc DVD.

http://store.indiatimes.com/video/Plane ... id=vid3491

Maybe this is the version that we should look out for?

I have a friend coming from Mumbai to the UK in April and I will ask him to find a copy of this DVD for me before he comes. I'll let you know what it's like unless someone beats me to it!
