kits, why is it that Prasad can do a decent progressive dvd like Kaaka Kaaka and then put out the interlaced, unwatchable crap that is Kal Ho Na Ho? does Anygaran have quality control and YRF not?

i was listening to the director's commentary on the KHNH dvd and wondered: if the director is watching the dvd as he is doing the commentary, does he think Prasad's work is actually worth being paid for?

KHNH is not 100% done at Prasad. They only authored from a PAL source they received on DigiBETA Tapes. Had they got negatives, you would have seen better quality and we would have all got 24fps. Only when telecine is done at Prasad, they can deliver 24fps.

quality of dvd mainly depends on how well the telecine is done! So, it shouldn't be done in hell! LOL!

i had a feeling it was PAL to NTSC...thanks for the reply though kits.

next time, tell Prasad to ask for a proper source. if Prasad is reputable, they shouldn't put their name next to such crap.

Anyone seen the Thirumalai DVD yet?

Yes! The PQ is ok. There is no grain and the colors are little better than usual. It is so much better than Anjayena dvd but still not on par with Ayngaran's best. :baaa:

I rented Thirumalai yesterday and it is better than Boys, for example, but you are right about it not being as good Ayngaran's best. Detail could have been better, with the bit budget possibly being strained by DTS. It was a little grainy and surprisingly dusty for such a recent film. Splices were often visible. And what are these film processing labs doing that recent films have frame damage?

My Sony player has a neat little feature called "frame" mode that works like Force Weave on PowerDVD. On progressive DVDs there will be no combing, on pseudo-progressive DVDs 3 frames will not have combing followed by 2 with coming, and field averaged DVDs show combing on most steps. It also works like this with slow motion. I skipped around and stepped through or slo-mo'd some parts and they showed no combing. This disc could very well have the same encoding problem Mhafner described with Kaaka Kaaka, but I don't know.

I didn't watch the movie itself but it looks very much like the average masala film. Romance where one or more parents disapproves. The heroine is linked somehow to one of the bad guys, Vijay has to kick some butt, a few songs in foreign locales, an item number, etc.

I watched a few scenes here and there, the songs, and the ending, so I didn't really review the film, but you can find real reviews of the film online.

IMHO, truth is a slight variation of what you said Arsh.

DVD authoring company will author a DVD for a fee. They can suggest for a proper source, but can't ask or insist for it.
Another variation to what you said, "ghoda ghaas se dosti karega tou khaeyga kaya?", " don't bite the hands that feed you".

mhafner, are DEI DVDs 48 fields per second? If so, it should be something that is done at the Telecine process. Prasad might not be having the right equipment to do such a thing.

Yes DEI are real progressive.

The people at Prasad think the reason for grain could be they opted for excessive sharpness setting while doing the Telecine. I requested them to reduce this on one of the new Telugu DVD "Shivamani" which is to be released in 2-days. I've seen the content on Layer 1 and it looks lot better than some of the recent works done at Prasad.

Then why is the DVD not sharp looking to begin with?

You suggest me what they need to do and I will try to experiment that on one of iDream's DVD. I personally felt Shivamani DVD was a lot of improvement compared to some of the best DVDs done at Prasad.

No. Europe.
Actually I'm in London at the
Hrithik-Ash concert this weekend
if you want to say hello.
And I visited Shemaroo once. They
use composite connections to their
monitors when mastering DVDs.

That's sad  . For all we know Prasad watches their dvd masters on 13" B&W tv. Eros prefers DVI and 60" calibrated hdtv to watch their masterpieces like KHAKEE. :baaa:
