Tamil films have yet to make sync sound mainstream - which Hindi films have been doing for the past 3-4 years. That too, for the pathetic reason that 3/4 of major Tamil films employ non-Tamil actresses who can't even speak the language.
Dolby Stereo came to India with 1942 - A Love Story long before any Tamil film. Granted, regional cinema is often an experiment ground for new formats as the costs incurred in a big industry like Bollywood would be far greater than less global industries like Chennai. Hindi cinema embraces anything that has been proven effective. That is why you would find far more Hindi films in both Dolby Digital and DTS than Tamil films which are usually only DTS - not surprising as Real Image is Chennai-based.
I think the only Tamil sync sound films in the past few years were Hey Ram, Aalavandhaan (not sure), Virumaandi, and Mani Ratnam's upcoming Ayudha Ezhudhu. And Kamal was behind three of those, which is telling of just how little support exists for sync sound.

Which came first, HAHK with Ultra Stereo or 1942 ALS? Both were 1994.
