I hate Pyramid too, man. They have all the classics but their DVDs are VHS quality. However, they're still better than many YRF and Ero$$$ DVDs of old films. Their DVD of Navarathiri is pretty good quality, though. Not PAL to NTSC like the others. Why won't Ayngaran and Tamilini do more old Tamil films?

yea I wish Ayngaran, and Tamilini will produce some old tamil movies. Old rajani movie, kamal movies, mani rathnam ones, all are produced by pyramid.

Themahal is the best place for u to buy tamil, and malayalam movies. I guess they have a huge selection of Telugu movies too. I am not a telugu fan, so I only buy tamil, and malayalam from them. If u buy like 3 movies thats like 50 dollers, and shipping will be free. They always ship the products next day by fedex.

PillaiRaju, I have Gandhi Nagar, So I don't want u to post the screen shots. Actully I am a huge mohan lal fan, and I have almost all of his movies and all of his dvd movies.

Guys I totally agree on Pyramid Dvd quality = crap = vhs quality.

But Kuttappan, you seem to like old Kamal movies, try the Pyramid Vaalvee Mayam. Picture is 4/3 and cropped to fit TV but quality is very good but I am sure there was some ehancements there. But still stands out as it is an old film. Film is very good as well.

I agree now with the original poster.
Having watched "Alai" and "Winner" this week end on Ayngaran DVDs (were they or VCDs), I have to say it is shocking to see how much Ayngaran has let us down on PQ.
The colors are washed on Alai and Winner is the worst!!!
Somebody needs to react against this 'cause Ayngaran will continue to deliver good DVDs on Box Office performers and crap like these on Box office duds.
Dvd quality should not be decided on BO performance...

What's happening with Ayngaran?

Sunny, I hope you will be able to provide some answers.

Arsh, some Tamil films are shot with a certain kind of 35mm that is low grade and miminum cost. If you watch them on the big screen they are no different!! I have spoken to some Tamil directors and cinematographers on this matter but since they work on a really tight budget nothing can be done to clarify this issue. However PC Sriram is now working with High Def camera for his new movie. If the film is a success then it is possible for all Tamil films to be shot on this format and the cost of hiring High Def for Tamil film-makers will be mimimum.

Also the quality of Winner, Alai and Anjenya is noted. Ayngaran used another Indian company (I think Shermroo) for these titles since Prasad was busy with other titles. However Ayngaran have acknowldeged this problem and ensures me that it won't happen again. Luckly it occured on three crap films :)

Thnx a lot, sunny, I didnt mean to be overtly critical here on ayangran, but wishful, to get better results in future!

I always thought SOUTH films use better STATE OF ART equipment ,technology than NORTH? then why inferior cameras with FULL OF GRAIN picture, Man it LOOKS like SAND SPRINKLED PROG VIDEO in KAAKA KAAKA! :baaa: :angry:

thanks for your reply but how do we know if a film is alow budget film or not?
And I do not understand this; as 35mm is what it is and quality doesn't change on film cell because it is low budget. It can be badly lit or even framed but 35mm doesn't "really" change due to budget restraints.
But I agree on the fact that Ayngaran used some crap/cheap dvd company to author or produce their stuff and I am sorry they did. I wish all the buyers of these dvds just returned their discs as I did to protest against something which should be considered rather as a VCD.

Sunny, I wish you had pointed this out earlier, you being so close to Ayngaran. And how come no one noticed this? And still sold these discs...

You cannot even trust the best these days...

IMO, Big budget movies like 'BOYS' go all out as far as production values is concerned. Most of the Indian cinematographers are obsessed with bringing beautiful colorful imagery to screen and not pushing grainy film stocks(who is making minority report or any other films about the cold and dead future in India anyway?). I thought most of the big budget mainstream Indian films use very good Kodak and Fuji stocks to shoot their movie. Since Ravi K Chandran etc works on a lot of Bollywood movies don't you think they object against using 'low' quality film stocks.

I am POSITIVE it is LOW QUALITY/ CHEAPO FILM STOCK being used, UNECESSARILY by SOUTHERN FILM MAKERS, to TAINT their GOOD TECHNICAL WIZARDARY!

C'mon guys, we have seen low budget (Vedham, Ennavalae, Sollamalae...) South Indian films in the past, and none were so close to the PQ we have seen in the three above mentionned films.

And I would like to add that there is another one to this list, that is MANASELLAM, and I think it is again the same company that has made this dvd. The main menu is just disgusting.

And eventhough you admitted that the above three dvds were of very bad quality (and blurry as mentioned above) you never raised the issue on MANASELLAM!
I was hoping that this issue was going to be over but after watching this new dvd, I am even more concerned on all the crap dvds that Ayngaran may put out.

If anybody has experienced these type of issues with any other Ayngaran released dvds, please fuel this topic...

Annjenya was actually shot for only 5 cores and this film was financed by the brokers AP International who I know rather well. An average estimate for a high budget Tamil film ranges from 10 - 15 cores - similar to Hindi. The highest was Boys at an estimated 25 cores.

I am advise by the producers of the films, who I keep in close contact. From this I advise Ayngaran on how to approch the film for home video market. Also not a lot of Tamil films are shot in good 35mm flim stock with Kodak, and the much preffered Fuji. Only noted cinematographers like Ravi K. Chandran, Santosh Sivan, Balasubramanium, Ravithunlu etc... shoot in good film stock due to thier connection with the film labs who provide them with good rates - its all about politics...

Kaaka Kaaka (budget at 11 cores) was shot with a fine grain print which caused the grain intentional. Also if you watch Vedham, Ennavalea and Sollamelae Ayngaran had applied a high level of softness to hide the grain. However there was much complaints and Ayngaran presently just transfer the film without any enhancements. Recently they have even stopped DVNR on newer films. Check out their forthcoming DVD of Joot *Srikanth.

thnx for your reply. It is helpful, to understand a few things on the technical side of PQ.
But I have to say that it is not important whether the film used (Kodak, Fuji...)was of bad quality or not but it is teh DVDs that matter. Ayngaran had some very good standards in DVD making for Tamil films and have let us down lately. And that is all that matters. They shouldn't sell or even promote these DVDs (at least as DVDs rather SVCDs or...).
The point I am trying to make here is why make DVDs if it is to give fans some low grade stuff. Isn't it better to buy pirate dvds then isntead of paying full price for the official?
Then you are saying that Ennavalae, Vedham...etc had digital enhancements, ok, BUT THEY HAD GOOD PQ compared to the above titles. How can someone like you who criticises EROS or VS accept these DVDs? And how can you not point this out to the readers of Zulm? What you are trying to do is show the best of Ayngaran and hide or try and forget the crap ones.

I generally do not write much on my disappointment on DVDs released by any companies as I am aware of their output, but Ayngaran had a Hollywood range status for me and my entourage but now we feel like cheated and robbed.

I hope Ayngaran never ever adventures into these type of production again.

Still now I cannot see why they could'n give us better PQ on these DVDs(even your Kodak, Fuji..stuff don't convince me) because something tells me money had something to do with this? And I won't pay for what I consider as substandard...
