Too bad it doesn't have English subtitles

Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! news. I just hope that Farhan Akhtar continues to take personal interest into the making of the DVDs to all his film, providing it extra technical merit than the usual would have chors that call themselves Indian DVD makers in the North American territory.

I assure you this title wont have grain as this was shot on excellent kodak neg. Then you can see that Prasad are not to blame when transfering the print.

Indian filmmakers generally use Kodak or Fuji neg to shoot their films - the same as Hollywood. Both companies produce excellent stock. Yet there are significant differences in grain in different films due to factors such as speed of film used and whether the film was pushed or pulled from its recommended ASA/ISO.

In other words, there is no guarantee that DCH won't have grain because it was shot on Kodak. Visible grain maybe also be desired by the filmmakers (e.g. The Cell).

Using Ayngaran's Boys DVD as reference Farhan Akthar is now working on a new version of Dil Chahta Hai for the Indian DVD domestic release.

I would recommend Shankar to use Dil Chahta Hai as a reference to good filmmaking. :p

Hollywood productions use 3 or 4 different stocks in one movie, just to set different mood in certain scenes. Indian filmmakers usually pick one stock use the same through out the movie. Also the kodak and fuji stocks available for Hollywood nowdays is really out of range(due to mainly budget) for Indian productions.

The Cell was shot with super-35 and the grain is expected in such a process. My problem is that the grain seen in Tamil dvds doesn't look like film grain comparing to grainy movies like saving private ryan, minority report, lost souls etc.

Those films were heavily manipulated to get their looks, so they would look different from Tamil films, which are normally shot in a straightforward fashion. Other than that, the grain of the Tamil films could be affecting the compression and making the DVD look weird.

I wouldn't mind having a better-looking copy of Dil Chahta Hai. Actually, the original wasn't too bad, the only problem was the constant freezing of the disc (bad media).
