Why bother these desi dvds are cheap as it is and and you get better quality, as it is these desi dvds are bad compared to Hollywood on top of that you want to compress it...

Like I bought K3G, a copy of the original release for 10 bucks CDN, and now its even cheaper around 4-5 bucks and this is great quality too.

Other than making your own song DVD I can't see why you would copy a desi flick, and about Hollywood flick I would not even try, you loose the quality and all so your just defeating the purpose, might as well just copy on a high quality VHS.

I don't buy a shit load of DVDs, I have maybe a total of 50-60 DVDs thats with 35 English and around 15 Desi.

Buy quality not quantity. I can't stand watching a shit quality movie. Especially when your screen size is 110" XGA the quality better be good otherwise it really looks bad. :oo:

Actually with many Hollywood titles you do not loose quality as the main movie fits easily on to a DVDR. I do not really care about menus and extras as I hardly watch these.

My main reason for backing up is because it is better to have a backup copy scratched by the kids than it is to lose the original. I can spend 80pence to make a backup and it will last a while before the kids manage to scratch it to the point it will not play properly. By the time they scratch the next backup they should be wise enough to handle a disc properly.

The reason for backing up a bollywood film is that the originals are on such shit media that I would rather have a slightly worse backup copy than an original that can only be played a few times.

Copying to VHS is a good idea but you do not get 5.1 sound (although decent 5.1 sound on bollywood films is hard to find).

For Hollywood movies...When I backup with Shrink I usually dont keep the menu, as I found it was a want and not a need and remove the extras ... I end with movie only and in most cases I dont need to compress at all, if I do I trim the credits and voila. I will post some screen shots of I movie I did recently, Once Upon A Time In Mexico tonight when I get home and also post what I did to achieve it.

I favour making copies of desi dvds because of following reasons:

1. I don't have easy and cheap access to duplicate/pirated dvds available in Toronto/Canada.
2. I am not sure of longer life of DVD which has comparatively good picture quality e.g. DEI/BEI DVDs.
3. The DVDs from other companies (like Eros, Yash Raj etc. etc...) do not have good picture qaulity so that I can pay that much price.
4. The dvds from companies like Sky/Samrat/Indiaweekly have picture qualities (except very few) like VHS and not sure about DVD life, so why to pay even $1.99 for such crap.
5. Nowdays, I buy spool of 25 blank dvds for US $5 to $10 (look for deal) and I pay $1/week for rental copy.
6. I bought a dvd burner for US $80 in 1st week of December and till now, I already made copies of 35 desi dvds and 15 disney (for my neice, borrowed from someone) dvds. Hence, I already recovered the money which I spent for dvd burner.

As promised....here are the shots of:
Once Upon A Time In Mexico
Backed up on DVD+R in the following manner:

Original DVD 7gb

- Opened Shrink
- Analysis finishes
- Remove all audio streams except for English 5.1
- Go through the extras and use the still pictures option and remove all audio streams on all documentaries
- Increase compression on trailers
- Main Menu and Movie used no compression
VOILA! It now fits on a 4.5gb DVD+R!

Below are the results:

I understand your guys concern regarding backing up cause kids will scratch and ruin dvds easily, but why would you make a back-up of Hollywood movies?, unless your kids handle those movies also.

I still take pride in owning less movies, but the originals not burnt dvds. I like the art work on the cover and the book let that some have, like imagine the God Father Triology as burnt and in some cheap photo copied cover :oo:

I just don't go crazy and buy everthing hell I don't even won't most of the movies for keeps that are out there. But the ones I want, I sure do want the cover art and all and in the most pristince way I can have it. So that is why choose not to burn movies......

Now games are another story altogether.

Easy answer because hollywood movies can also scratch it is better to get a decent dvdr disc and just put a main movie backup on it. As mentioned earlier in another post you can compress and still keep much of the quality if you delete the credits etc. They do not in the large suffer from the shit media problem associated with the likes of Videosound but I think it is better to let the kids handle a copy costing less than £1.00 than to give them the originals. Maybe if the DVD format had meant the discs were enclosed in a caddy type system they would not be scratched but this is not the case so I for one will continue to backup both bollywood and hollywood movies.

Also I am not pirating discs. I do own the originals for all the discs I have backed up. So like you I can sit and admire covers and the special booklets you sometimes get.

I totally agree with you!! Unless your backing up copies of hollywood movies that your kids will handle their is no need to copy Hollywood DVDs!!!

I understand the copying of desi flicks cause the quality of the DVDs is usually not good and the price high but there is no need to copy hollywood dvds as their quality is superb majority of the time.

I allways thought that Zulm.net was created to improve the quality of DVDs, not a forum that advocates piracy!!!!

out!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think we are promoting piracy by making backup/copies, but teaching a lesson to desi dvd manufacturers/authors (BEI/DEI, YashRaj, Eros, Sky etc. etc. etc.) by not buying their products.

I'm not talking about copying Desi DVDs. I'm talking about copying Hollywood movies!! Now exactly what lesson are we teaching Disney???

Punjabimunda I agree with you totally, Zulm.net is not about promoting piracy, especially for Hollywood movies. We are discussing backing up of movies you already own, just like other sites: DVDrHelp.com etc. If some individuals decide on copying DVDs that are rented/borrowed than it is upto them.

Before this thread becomes something else....I am now closing this link/thread. People can use this thread as a source of information for backing up their DVDs or creating song compilations of DVDs they already own, 2 pages detailed info should be good enough.
