I've recently got a new computer with a dvd rw. I was wondering if anybody knew of any programs which would allow me copy some of my dvds on to dvd r disks. I was looking to copy some of the rarier disks in my collection.

I have heard of dvd-x but was wondering if there is any other programs out there which I could download. :hmm: :nopity: :stupid:

I personally use:

DVD Decryptor: first to rip to hard drive and so that any copy protection is broken :D

Then I use either:

DVD Shrink: To make the the rip fit a 4.7gb DVD. With this program you choose to compress certain parts and make the main feature better looking. With its deep analysis picture quality is much better. Check out their forums for more details.

DVD2One: Just recently got this program and am in the process of trying it and will let you know later if you want.

Guides available at DVDRHelp.com that can help you decide on how to rip and burn a disc step by step.

Stay away from:

DVD X Copy, I despise this program but there are a few people out there who think its the best out there.

first to rip the dvd i use dvd decrypter or smart ripper but i prefer dvd cecrypter because its a lot simpler

to copy the dvd i use
pinnicale instant copy 8
the program is pretty good at establishing most of the picture quality but at times it has some bugs, so i always copy it to a dvdrw first just in case

or

sometimes is use dvd2one
when i don't want the menus of a movie, the picture quality isn't too bad than instant copy but it does take only a short time to do around 30 minutes where as instant copy can take 1-6 hrs depending on your computer

hope this helps

DVD Shrink as well can take 1hr - 2hrs and if you use the deep analysis mode it can take double but picture quality is much better.....

If you decide on DVD Shrink and want good picture quality use DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5 and if you want to compress the movie for example to fit two on one dvd then use DVD Shrink 2.3. With DVD Shrink you can skip the ripping process used by DVD Decryptor as it can do it for you but it can wear out your DVD Writer (if that is what you use to rip and dont have a DVD Rom).

DVD Shrink does not burn to DVD, the resulting files must burned using a program like NERO

I probably sound like I am trying to endorse DVD Shrink but I have good experience with it so far maybe that is why I like it and its easy to understand quickly. Use what ever you feel comfortable with but do check out DVDRHelp.com for their guides and their forums for more help.

Urbanlegend,

Have you ever tried to copy the menus and main movie removing extra fetures?
If yes, what software did you use and how?

Thanks in advance.

I used a program called Clone DVD which can replace extras with a grey screen for the same duration but at a bit rate of .24mbs. Should mention though that a grey screen is displayed on most dvd players but on some it is a flashing screen which is annoying which is why I usually stick to the bottom option.

Otherwise what I usually do for the extras is use still pictures option in DVD Shrink with no audio.

With either of the above options I am able to keep the menu if desired...

I one of people that use DVD X Copy and think that it's pretty good!!

I like DVD X Copy cuz my knowledge of computers is limited. With DVDXCOPY i just stick in the movie and the blank DVD into the DVD drive and DVD X Copy does the rest. I don't have to worry about getting one program to shrink it or decoting or whatever and then another program to burn it. DVD X Copy does it all for me. It gives me the option of keeping the menus and the extra features or deleting them!

out!!!!!!!!

You can use Autoshrinkiso to automate the process of creating an iso and burning to a dvd. Works well.

Would not waste money on DVD Xcopy. You do not need to be an expert in Pascal or Cobol to use DVD Decrypter and DVD Shirnk. With Autoshrinkiso you make the whole process even easier.

Does DVD Shrink retain the 16:9 aspect ratio i.e. keep the copy anamorphic? I am interested in making a anamorphic copy with menus. Is this possible?

Yup! I have ripped songs from various indian dvds, some animorphic and some non-animorphic and compiled them all together using shrink and the dvd works flawlessly! Automatically adjusting a movie to 16:9 (if your dvd player is set to 16:9) and going back to normal widescreen (non 16:9). Only downside to creating a song dvd is that you wont have a menu....but you can always use a seperate program to create your own menu if you so desire, never did it myself as for songs I didnt feel the need myself.

Thanks urbanlegend. Siince you rip song DVDs, I have another question for you. Sometmes songs dont take up a chapter all by themselves i.e. while they are at the start of a chapter, there are other scenes in the same chapter. How do you cut only song part?

With DVD shrink what you have to do is click on Re-Author and another window of DVD Shrink will open

Then carry the main movie over into the re-author window for the number of songs you want from that particular movie. ie you want 3 songs, carry the main movie over 3 times, dont worry if the 4.7 gig barrier green line turns red, it will change later.

Once done, if you want you can close the main DVD Shrink window leaving the Re-Author window open

Then click one one movie and then click on the Start/End button. From this window you can select the chapter for the song you want first and adjust the start/end points...ie cutting out dialogues at the end of a song because the chapter wasnt only for the song. Continue to do this for the other two songs (or however many) you want. At the end you will notice that the green line for the 4.7 gb barrier is no longer red and in fact it shows only some green and the rest grey (free space on a DVD+/-R/RW).

At the end click on backup and select a directory for the songs, maybe Songs1 or the name of the movie. This is important, create seperate directory for each movie.

Okay now we want to compile a DVD of songs. Open DVD Shrink and click on Open Files and select a directory with songs in it and select the VIDEO_TS.IFO file, once analynization is done click on Re-Author and drag the files over, then click on the first window again and click Open Files and select another directory with songs and so on etc.

Once the Re-author window has all the songs in that you want (personally I only put 26 songs at the most with no compression so quality is not recompressed causing pixelation) click on Backup and select the final directory for the songs.

Once back up go into your favorite burning program (for this example Nero 6.0.0.19) and select the DVD-Video and it should show you an AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folder. Then navigate to the directory of the final songs directory and drag all the files over to the VIDEO_TS folder leaving the AUDIO_TS folder empty. Then insert your blank DVD (I use DVD+/-RW in case there are any mistakes at least I dont make a coaster), click on burn and your done!

PHEW! Hope that helps, maybe it sounds a bit confusing but it isnt and once you have done a few you also think its really easy!

Does anybody try to edit the menu? If yes, which software preferably freeware) and how?

Why do I need this - I backed up a dvd of songs keeping only selected songs. I would like to edit the menu so that the songs (which are not on the dvd) are not selected.
