Look into Denons and Onkyos. Can't remember the exact models but just visit their sites.

Its better if you stay away from receivers that comes with dvd players and speakers (HTiB). Buy seperate components for future upgradability.

Look for a receiver with Dolby Prologic II. This will spread 2.0 audio into all the channels. But it is not real 5.1. I use Dolby Prologic II music on my music cds and gets great results

The highest discrete channel out there is 6.1. You can have 7.1 set up but no sound format is 7.1 yet! If you want 6.1, look for a receiver with DOLBY DIGITAL EX and DTS-ES MATRIX and discrete.

It will depend upon your budget <$1000- yamaha, pioneer, Harman Kardon, NAD and Denon makes great receivers

Speakers: <$1000 JBL, NHT, AXIOMS, etc makes great sounding speakers!

GOODLUCK!!!

If audio originated as Mono and then panned into 2 channels, then neither you get stereo effect nor surround effect. You can get same audio coming out of all speakers that you direct.

If the audio is real stereo, then you will get surround effect, different sound and time delays as you set them.

Denon receiver - dotn know the model no. but its price is $200
Harmon Kardon speakers - HK10 - $269, its having a total power of 750 watts, it comprises of everything DD5.1,DTS, prologic -2, and all other features that you can think of.

I have Onkyo SR600 receiver which I bought a year ago for US$400. I am totally satisfied with it. It has 6.1 (dts/dd) output, but I don't have any 6.1 dvds. :(
And I don't expect any Hindi dvds with 6.1 audio in near future with what we are getting right now. :( :( :(

I have YAMAHA DSP - 1 . It is 5 channel Amps . and have 16 differnt sound modes. I bought few years back for price of $ 2300.00. it is a dolby prologic. I am using JBL L5 speaker for main . i really like the sound .
it is depend how much money you like spend on the system.
I think you live in Vancouver . if you look in buy and sell somtime there are some good system for reasonable price .
YAMHA , DENON . Harman Karden and onkyo are good brand . again it all depend on the model . or visit A & B sound Store. they may help you within your budget.

If you are relegated to just HTIB's, check out the Onkyo HTS-760. It's a 6.1 system that comes with pretty good speakers and a very nice receiver. There's also a 5.1 available if you don't have space for the rear center. The 760 can be had for around $450 (price has gone up recently) and it sounds as good as something you would get for a $1k.

Yes, it has Dolby Pro-Logic II and all the other formats like DD EX, DTS-ES, DTS-Neo, etc. etc.... basically all the formats out there.

The subwoofer is a powered and is huge. That's the best part of the system, you get big thumping bass.

Check Onkyo's site at http://www.onkyousa.com

Also check the customer reviews at Circuit City Circuit City

And I believe CNET reviewed it too and gave it a 9.5/10 or something. It's the best bang for the buck.

Whether or not the 6.1 flag is set on the DVD, you can still decode the 5.1 into 6.1 to hear whether or not there is any effect. Some 5.1 discs matrix fine into 6.1, and if the movie was theatrically 6.1, like Indian with Sunny Deol, it might decode into 6.1 on the home theater. If the left and right surround on a DVD merely collapse into the center surround, just play it in 5.1 mode.
