The format war between DTS and Dolby Digital has been going on for a long time.I would like to know what people on this forum think on the issue.

Interesting fact to note is that most of the Bollywood movies now mix in both but in the south they seems to prefer mostly DTS.

In my opinion and to my ears, DTS has an edge over Dolby Digital.

That's probably because DTS came to the south first and Dolby Digital to Bombay. DTS is marketed by Chennai's most sought after sound equipment, recording and mixing studio, Real Image and its subsidiary Media Artistes.

Personally, I've had better sonic experiences in DTS. however if a print is in DD, it is more likely to reach its way to the audience as DTS discs often get scratched, misplaced or forgotten to be handed with the film print. Hindi movies are right in this aspect, to mix their films in all formats so that the likelihood of a print being played in any digital format is high. For example, the local Hindi cinema hall here only has DTS and mono capabilities, so if a print doesn't come with the disc, I have to settle for the other extreme. Fortunately there is another cinema operator whose halls all have DTS, DD and Dolby Stereo SR - and I've never once heard a film there not played in digital. It is also important that filmmakers do at least 4 different mixes - Mono, Dolby Stereo, Dolby Digital and DTS (and in Dolby EX if need be). Some Indian films are only in mono and DTS - 2 extremes.

Technically and theoretically, as it is well known, DTS is the 'better' format due to its lesser compression.

Except for Dolby, it's universally accepted that DTS is better. How much better, depends on how good a set-up and equipment you have. For audio systems, costing $1000 or less, you won't notice any difference.

:O Althought I am not an expert in this field, in my opinion if a Dolby Digital Track is done pretty well its can be better than DTS. Lord of the Ring I like Dolby Better than DTS. DTS in that movie has less clarity than the Dolby, as what i noticed. On the movie Seven, i prefered the DTS track over the Dolby.

So i think if its mixed and authored properly Dolby and DTS has the same quality. DTS just seem little louder. :baaa:

DOlby :fight: DTS the argument continues

I prefer DTS at both movie theater and home theater given the choice.

But Dolby Digital is also good. ex. LOTR, STAR WARS

Compare to the other two SDDS is boring. It just doesn't sound good to my ears.

For both audios done properly, DTS is better capability wise.

Otherwise, well done DD or even Dolby surround can be better than badly done DTS and vice versa.

I must admit though, like VHS and Beta competition, DD has already won. A lot more theatres are equipped with DD than DTS.

Rarely a theatre has both or all three or more variations capability.

One multiplex claimed that they have some units of DD (including DD-EX & Dolby surround), some of DTS (including DTS-ES) and some of SDDS; and he can feed any theatre with any audio format from his centralized audio control room.

I totally agree with you, unless you have a decent or high end home theater set up you are not going to notice much difference between DTS and DD.

out!!!!

Bose and Sony speakers don't qualify as high end systems!!!

Finally, I found some body who agrees with me.

When I bought my audio equip (not a pre-packaged sys from Sony etc), all my friends tghought I bought a cheap system as it was not Sony or Panasonic. People in general don't know that Sony, Panasonic etc, don't make their own speakers and other equip in their pre-packaged system.

Among packaged systems, I guess Bose is almost there, near high end. May be Pioneer Elite as well??

BTW, once you have a high end system, even that can sound terrible if speaker placement and/ or room accoustics is not right.

There two reasons why Dolby Digital is inferior:

Dolby D is highly compressed and the drop out rate is very high especially if the print is dirty.

While I can't really complain much about DTS...it is just excellent..

Bose never lists the specs of their equipment. Bose is way over priced, there are other speakers out there that cost less and sound better than the bose speakers. Their micro speakers are nowhere near as good as tower speakers. There is alot of hype but no substance with bose speakers!!

Sony makes great TVs, camcorders etc, but their speakers leave alot of be desired!!

The theatrical bitrate for DD is a bit lower than even the 384kbps used for DVD 5.1 tracks, and of course definitely lower than 448.

No arguments there. In short, BOSE is the biggest fraud ever pulled on the strength of marketing. As for Sony and speaker quality, the fact is that not one Japanese company makes even a half decent speaker, that is if they make any at all since I think all of them are just OEM suplied speakers from mostly Chinese manufacturers. As far as receivers are concerned Denon is hard to beat for making the best.
