The L. V. Prasad Group, a pioneer in the south Indian film industry for more than 50 years, is starting up the first IMAX theatre which will be known as `Prasad, the Experience' that is going to be inaugurated on January 17, 2003 in Hyderabad (with Rs 60 crores) with a capacity of 635 seats near NTR Gardens, which also consists a 200,000 sq ft shopping arcade and food court. Imax uses a 15-perforation frame, the largest in motion picture history on a 70 mm format that will screen the best of English, Hindi and Telugu films and low budget films. The theatre has been designed according to the international standards in light, sound and volume.

Any one heard of this I-Max theatre showing regular Indian Feature Films??

Master_J, Prasad site clearly states that Hindi, Telugu and English Films will be shown in I-Max 70mm format.

" on a 70 mm format that will screen the best of English, Hindi and Telugu films and low budget films. The theatre has been designed according to the international standards in light, sound and volume."

BTW, I-Max Taj Mahal project starring Aish has long been shelved as financially not viable. A regular 35mm widescreen Taj Mahal starring Manisha Koirala is in the making.

Bombay already has an Imax theater owned by Ad labs that was opened in March 2001. So the Prasad theater must be first in Hydrabad not in India. Though Adlabs only show Imax english films they also have a multiplex where Hindi films are also shown . It is also the world's largest Imax dome theater...

I don't expect Indian Feature or even Hollywood Feature Films to be shot and projected in true I-Max.

99.99 of the present crop of feature films are in 35mm. In the past, when regular 70mm was considered worth boasting, only a few films were actually got 70mm prints. Some of these were blown up to 70mm from 35mm negative and only a very few that were shot as well as projected in 70mm film.

Even if a film is not shot in 70mm or in I-Max, a 35mm print can be blown up to 70mm film or to I-Max film. In both these up-conversions, film projection on very large screes will be better than 35mm film projected equally big screen.

As per Prasad site, they claimed that they will show Hindi, Telugu and English feature films in I-Max format. This implies that 24 fps 35mm film will be blown up on to 70mm @ 48 fps to make it I-Max projection. I doubt, this will happen, but this is what the Prasad announcement implies. May be they really will upconvert 35mm to 70mm or I-Max?? That's why I started this thread, if someone knows if they really do. The I-Max theatre was to open in Jan 2003. So, most likely it's operational now.

BTW, Prasad announcement said that it'll be first Prasad I-Max, not first I-Max in India.

Congress, do you know if other I-Max theatres in India show Indian feature films blown up to I-Max or to 70mm film??
Also, if sometimes or often, 35mm films are blown up to 70mm film for those theatres that are equipped with 70mm projectors??

This article reports that the Prasad theater is yet to open....

Currently there are two IMAX theatres in India, the Adlabs IMAX Theatre in Mumbai, which opened in 2001 and the Gujarat Science City IMAX® 3D Theatre in Ahmedabad, which opened in 2002. The Prasad IMAX Theatre in Hydrabad is scheduled to open before June of this year.

They are also taking interest in Bollywood movies....can't wait for the day when Imax Hindi films wil be shown...talking of which has anyone actually seen Taal in Imax or any other Hindi films??...:D Although I have been to a 70mm film shoot, a silly Singaporean film called On Guard which was shot in Iwerks 8/70mm by a canadian crew, I have never actually seen one...Anyway that was an experience

Also I don't think there are much 70mm theaters in India. Of course they are there but I don't think they really show any 70mm films anymore (Most number in south India). In Delhi there is Sheila India's first 70mm theater which I happen to visit but unfortunately they only showed regular 35mm films on a very big screen probably meant for 70mm. Anyway Sanjay should know more since he's from Delhi. In any case 15/70 Imax is much better...

One possible example of 35mm film blown up to 70mm, if true (I say, "if true" if Maratha Mandir in Bombay is 70mm??), is:

Assuming that Maratha Mandir theatre in Bombay is equipped with 70mm.

A radio news report by Harish Bhimani at one time said, "V. Shantram made a 70mm print of his old classic Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje from his 35mm film and released it in his own, newly renovated theatre, Maratha Mandir. And it's doing thundering business."

I remember all this from 80s. It's true, only if Maratha Mandir is 70mm equipped and if it really was owned by V. Shantaram??

P.S.
Of course, we know of SHOLAY blown up to 70mm from 35mm film.

Taal, Devdas and other Indian films shown here in Toronto I-Max theatre were from 35mm film print.

Many prestigeous premierre screenings of Hollywood films are on giant screens, where they use, specially made, blown up 70mm film prints.
The new MATRIX movie has gone one step further. It's being blown up to 15/70 I-Max.
