Hugh Jackman opposite Aamir?

Vivek Fernandes | April 24, 2003 17:04 IST

Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman, known to many as comicbook hero Logan/Wolverine in the 2000 hit X-Men, may soon find Bollywood calling.

The Australia-born actor, last seen opposite Meg Ryan in the romantic comedy Kate & Leopold, may face the camera in India for the Ketan Mehta-directed 1857: The Rising.

The movie stars Aamir Khan and Rani Mukerji in the lead. It is based on the life of Mangal Pandey, the soldier who began the First War of Indian Independence in 1857.

Scripted by Farrokh Dhondy, the film is produced by Bobby Bedi, who produced Shekhar Kapur's Bandit Queen, Deepa Mehta's Fire and Shaad Ali's Saathiya. The music will be scored by A R Rahman.

Mehta, director of Mirch Masala and Maya Memsaab, confirmed talks were on with Jackman. "We are in the final stages of negotiation with Mr Jackman, as we are with numerous other actors and actresses, for a role in the film. But nothing has been finalised. As soon as we decide on our cast, we shall make a formal announcement."

Well, they decide on their cast. Wanna bet they are waiting
for Jackman to say yes and not Jackman for them to say yes?

This is indeed the closest Indian Cinema has ever gotten to whereby a major Hollywood celebrity considered to work in a traditional "Indian" film project since Marlon Brando was very interested in working in a Satyajit Ray film during the 60s.
