"Iruvar" is a much anticipated DVD release as its the only Mani Ratnam movie that hasnt found a good transfer yet. It was not Nagarjuna, but Mohanlal who starred opposite Aishwarya in this movie (her first big film, her debut was in Telugu in 1991's 'Mamagaru').

Pyramid has a DVD version of 'Iruvar' directly from the VHS source but since this is a color film with Rahman's music, picking up such a release is an insult to the makers. The songs are beautiful, all of them.

SK, I realize Aish has this impression among her fans that shes flat chested, but shes really not. Shes getting *better* ever since she went the Sushmita route and did some enhancement work last year. Or so the story goes. But theres a very noticeable difference these days, if you know what I mean.

There are many more MR films that still need good transfers.

Dalapathi
Agni Natchatram
Nayakan
Roja (no good Tamil version exists)
Anjali
Mouna Ragam
Pallavi Anu Pallavi (MR's first film, in Kannada)
Geetanjali/Idhayathey Thirudathey
Dil Se (Eros-DEI, Eros-B4U versions are cropped, and the Ayngaran disc is dubbed in Tamil)

Is there any chance of a remastered Alai Payuthey? The transfer certainly could be improved, particularly the dark scenes.

Dragun, almost all of the titles you have mentioned have been released on DVD by Pyramid and are all available at http://www.mail-bag.com - however, they all retail for around $22 so its not as if I'd like to experiment to find out what quality they are!

Pyramid are the Baba of Tamil DVDs. Need I say more? Their DVDs are made from VHS or from crappy sub-DVD quality masters. Unfortunately, the vast majority of old Tamil films are from them, but luckily the vast majority of new films goes to Ayngaran.

Yes, I agree. Pyramid has so many Tamil titles that you cant get anywhere else, but these are more or less VHS to DVD transfers which isn't really good. Sound is always mono despite their claims of 5.1 - I know that 'Iruvar', despite being $22, is one of their better ones, but the rest suck. I thought their version of 'Sindhu Bhairavi' was pretty good though.

By the way guys, India Plaza is offering the very hard-to-find DVD edition of 'Kandukondain' in Telugu. The title is 'Priyarulu Pilchindi' (translation anyone?), and its really worth it as I've seen it and it isn't as horrible as some EVP and KAD titles of Telugu movies. At best its like some Eros DVD. However, considering Telugu DVDs to begin with are mostly crap transfers, this is one of the better ones.

Whatever the quality of that version is, the Ayngaran version is probably better in all aspects.

Even so ... expect a progressive version of this dvd ! I hope this will make EVP understand that there is no correlation between progressive DVds and 5.1 audio !

I pointed out on EVP's forum that Hollywood and DEI DVDs are mostly progressive and with 5.1 sounds, sometimes DD and DTS for Hollywood discs.

I hope Ayngaran will allow us to skip their logo and contact info on these new progressive DVDs while they're at it. So annoying!

Ayngaran is seriously pissing me off with their logo on the movie frame. It's an annoying trend started with all those damn vhs ads. What's next, may be some rice and cooking oil ads on the black borders. :ffs:

Is Ayngaran still doing that? The latest of their DVDs I saw was "Run," and IIRC, it only had the "Ayngaran DVD" logo on during the songs.

I wonder if many have actually bought grinders because of the banner ads on movies :)
