Didn't Raj Kapoor Direct some of the films in the first category??

I know, Around The World (Directed by Paachhi) and Kal Aaj Aur Kal (Directed by Randhir Kapoor) were not directed by Raj Kapoor, but I think Raj Kapoor did direct Boot Polish , Jagte Raho and Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai. Perhaps, also Andaaz and Aah??

What the hell people!!? Has Raj Kapoor and his films become a taboo for you guys? I'm really surprised that hardly many people in this forum aren't taking this opportunity to rate his films.

I'd jump in if I had seen many of his films. As it is, I've only seen Bobby and about 20 minutes of Sangam.

Bobby- ***

Awaara - *****
Shree 420 - ****1/2
Anari - *****
(vis-a-vis his acting)
Mera Naam Joker - ***1/2

Regarding his direction , I would place
Awaara with *****

The dialogues of RTGM were just fabulous...
Awaara, the way he zoomed in the camera, was trendsetting !

Yeap! And I especially love the way the camera divides reality from a fantasy and vis-a-vis from the dream sequences within the film. Hell! most Indian filmmakers even today can't master the type of cinematography depicted in Awaara. The film is a true masterpiece.

I didn't jump in the rating game as I liked all movies equally, whether produced, directed or edited by Raj Kapoor. To me all were masterpieces.

Movies, in which Raj Kapoor was just acting, are definitely not as good. You can see what an impact film direction and editing can make to a movie. As per Raj Kapoor, he never interfered with director's work. Not even if the director was Randhir Kapoor.

RTGM may have been a crap film, but for the RK touch !

What I liked in the film was Saeed Jaffery's dialogues..

"Kutta chahe kitna bhi bura kyon na ho... wafadaar zaroor rehta hai"

And the way he picturized his metaphors...
"Ganga na hi aaj tak kabhi ulti bahi hai, aur nahi kabhi ulti bahegi" !

I wonder, if I should ask about RTGM here or in a different thread. If this Q obstructs the flow, we can take it to a new thread.

Discuss:
If you listen to the last song, in RTGM that closes the movie, very carefully, it becomes obvious that something terrible has happened. Most likely, Rajiv Kapoor or Mandakini or the baby or all have been killed. RK's concept was to make it a tragedy but at the strong protests of the distributors, he changed it into not that sad an ending.

But, the lyrics of the closing song match perfectly with tragedy not depicted in the movie. Obviously, the lyrics weren't changed, but the ending was.

What do you think? Would the movie have had a bigger impact if the ending was as tragic as Raj Kapoor wanted??

It may have done well. Remember when Mansoor Khan retained the original tragic ending for Qayamat se Qayamat Tak and it went on to become a blockbuster even though some theatres decided to show the 'happy' ending. In fact the film did so well that ONLY the tragic version was allowed to be screened after a while. I remember in 1988 in Madras when I saw the film at Emerald theatre, I was 11, and the film ended on a happy note. When I saw it on VHS a while later my mom and me were confused.
