Ramayana goes international

Bunty Walia's Ramayana will see Salman Khan as Lord Ram and Sohail Khan as Lakshman. It is still undecided who will play Sita. Walia wants a foreign actress to play Sita since it is an international project. The exile will be shot in the jungles of New Zealand.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Khan's Maryada Purushottam Ram may also cast foreign artistes. "My film is an international product," he says. "I will leave no stone unturned to give it an international look." Scripted by Farrukh Dhondy, the film will feature Jackie Shroff as Ravan. The lead pair has not been finalised.

God help us!

Salman Khan is the last person on earth who should be playing Lord Ram, can't they get anyone else. The Woman-beater, the guy who kills endangered spiecies, the same fool who ran over someone and got away with it get's to play Lord Ram! On top of that he can't act to save his life. I just hope someone finishes him off before he gets the chance!

Oh, and also the fact that the 2 main lead for Ram and his brother are played by muslim actors are bound to stir up some trouble in India. And when they get a western actress to play Sita, that will cause a ruckus! Remember Peter Brook's stage production of Mahabharata? even though it was aimed at westeners with it's English cast, it pissed off so many Hindu's in the UK alone!

At least Sanjay Khan's production is something to look forward too, just hope he went all out on the sp. effects and it doesn't look like the TV series!

Wasn't there a big deal because a Muslim played Arjun in the B.R. Chopra serial?

Yep, there was. But from what I heard he had to change his name (or adopt a screen name) which ironically was Arjun and they tried to hide the fact that he was a Muslim. I think that because they tried to hide this from the public resulted in more even trouble!

:bangbang:
I think the guy who wrote the screenplay for the Mahabharata TV series was a muslim too, but he was praised for it.

You guys have totally got it wrong. There was never any controversy abt a Muslim playing the lead role of Arjun (Feroze Khan to be precise..)... And of 'cos B.R.Chopra & Ravi Chopra publicly admitted on national television that the serial had a punch cos of Dr Rahi Masoom Reza's dialogues ( which he scripted in Urdu and which were later translated into Hindi). You should remember, this serial was made in the last few years of the 80's before the whole Ayodhya-Babri Masjid controversy erupted.

I had a glimpse of Sanjay Khan's Mahabhart and it is yucky (to be apologetic)... and disgraceful (to be vitriolic) !
Salman as Ram ... :p the film will never see the light of the day :)

I'm pretty sure there were some controversy over the lead of Arjun and he did have to change his name for the series. This may have been after the Ayodhya dispute, but I remember reading it in a magazine when I was alot younger.

With the Sanjay Khan series the sp effects was bad and even unecessary. He said something that his movie production of Maryada Purushottam will be the best thing he's done. Well we have to wait and see.

As for the Salman Khan one, expect quite a few riots over it.

And not just from the religious people either. Film lovers will get angry as well, hehe. The closest SK will get to playing a god is that one scene in Andaz Apna Apna where Amir and Salman find each other in the same bed and the innkeeper walks in!

I'm not so sure about the religion bit - but this I'm sure. Casting Salman in any movie is a sin! Hey let me guess what made him do it...he gets to remain shirtless throughout... :bangbang:
