I just got my copy from my mate tonight and after testing the film out on my system the DVD was not that good. Fitting in a near four hour film on one disc was a stupid thing to do and the picture does suffer in qulaity. The picture is also slightly cropped as the film was shot in 2.45:1 format, and the DVD is presented in a 2.32:1 ratio. The cropping is not evident but when I compared it with the Pirate DVD, borrowed from my uncle, I could see some cropping. Still i'm thankful it went to CT and not Video-Sound or EROS.

The sound is phat, and the best thing on this disc. Rahman should get an oscar nomination for best score! After hearing it on this disc you would hear why!

WE WAITED 7 MONTHS FOR LAGAAN.....6 YEARS FOR DDLJ

WHEN COMPARED TO LAGGAN .....DDLJ LOOKS LIKE A SHODDY AMATEUR PIRATE....

For CT standards the movie might be average but for Ysh raj you will never see such quality coming out of it ever

ESPECIALLY THE OLD FILMS WHICH ARE RE-RELEASED - I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THEY CONVERT THEM TO WOT THEY CALL - "5.1 DIGITIALLY ENHANCED SOUND" - IT DOES SOUND AWFUL - WHY NOT KEEP THE ORIG TWO CHANNEL????

Until YashRaj ends the Super Digital contract you WILL NEVER SEE A QUALITY DVD by YASHRAJ. We can only hope that YASHRAJ moves to DEI when the Super Digital contract ends.

Sunny is possible you can get some screen shots of this pirate with the wider scope?

This is no better than the Region 1 DVD of "Gone with the Wind." It is a 2-sided disc, with one layer on each side, and the 4 hour film is crammed onto those two layers. Compression technology has improved since then, but why not give Lagaan 2 dual layer discs or a DVD-18? Especially considering that "Godfather II," which is 200 minutes long, got 2 discs. I may pick this disc up just to send the message that Columbia should release more Indian films, but I'm thinking I won't be absolutely thrilled with it.

BTW, Amazon.com has a Jan. 22 date for the release, but is it really out now in the US? Or have a bunch of Best Buy stores broken the street date?

Is the quality of the CT Lagaan DVD better than that of the Mohabbatein DVD from Yash Raj?

Ali,
I could be in trouble with the review site DVD.reviewer, which I am part of. But if you give me the exact times of screenshots used from the original DVD, i'll get one of my mates to post the exact shots from the pirate DVD so a comparison is made, and plus I haven't broken any rules :)

In terms of picture and sound, miles better. But if you after extras content then Lagaan doesn’t have them.

Sunny if you can just grab any 2-3 screen shots from any point in the film and I'll do match them from CT DVD. I was just curious to see how wider the pirate Lagaan is; the cinematic (according to widescreen mag) and DVD both share 2.35:1 AR. Email them to me ali@zulm.net
