Wot I do is go to my local Indo-Guyanese stores, and wot they have are DVD's on sale, that they copy onto the VHS tape, and sell it.

That's piracy

It may be piracy, but this is the norm here in Canada and may be also in the US. Norm means, each and every VHS rental store. If they want to stop piracy, and this is done without the right holder's blessings (I doubt that), this is a good place to start.

In general, DVD rental is aprox $3, VHS-pre-DVD days rental is aprox $0.50, and a VHS copied from DVD is at a premium and they charge aprox $1.50 on the average.

economically, it makes sense for the store wallah to do the copying - think this way, the only way nowadays they get movies is:
- buy 1 pirate vhs b4 release date (copied from pirate) = ~5CDN, and make copies of it...(interestingly, here atleast most rental shops themselves don't sell the pirate dvd)..
OR
- buy 1 copy of the legit dvd when it is released = ~25CDN, and then make copies themselves onto vhs(make 5-6 copies, and also hope that you can sell 1 or 2 of those vhs)...1CDN for vhs rental, and 3 CDN for the dvd..
OR
-sell the official VHS, along with a cd soundtrack of the movie for a combined *inflated* cost...~15CDN

from whichever way you look at it, being in the business is financially sound - and there is no reason to stop doing piracy....unless they get strict about piracy, no one will ever stop :D

Economically its been done here, and I can echo that it is the practice here in Canada to do that. I doubt it will ever stop because there are still many people who go for the VHS and not for the DVDs.

I saw in one store some DVD-to-VHS dubs that had the Al Mansoor banner on them, but had a copy of the DVD cover at the top. I wonder if the store is putting the covers together or AM are selling these tapes.

They aren't actual VHS's. You just go to Circuit City, buy tapes, and press record with the DVD. Make a few copies, then sell the tape for $4.00, that isn't piracy! The covers say JVC SX120 or MAXWELL VIDEO CASSETTE, up to 6 hours of everyday recording, taping tv programs, and frequent re-recording. These are the VHS's I'm talking about, they aren't actual tapes like the ones they do for Hollywood films.

Sure sounds like piracy to me.

Well jus mek mi tell yuh a likkle ting yere!

Dem a tek one degge degge DVD, fling eet ina de DVD Player, tun hon de VCR, dem a puteen a VHS, den dem press RECORD, an copy de dyam si in! Den dem a putaan de label ex. Saathiya starring Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukherjee, sell eet fi 4 dalla and mek dem money!

(For those that don't understand Patois:
They take a single DVD, put it in the DVD player, turn on the VCR, put in the tape-VHS, then they press record, and copy the damn thing! Then they put on a label ex. Saathiya starring Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukherjee, sell it for $4 and make their money! )

This isn't privacy! It is just the regular way of doing it. I don't want to pay $15 fi sum schuped likkle eediat DVD two years ago. Now that I have a DVD Player, and there are such things like the Eros Entertainment 99 Cents sale (miracles! lol), I don't mind it. I've had VCR's since forever...

Kishi, what you are describing is outrightly piracy from whichever direction its looked at. It is an infringement of intellectual copyright which is deserved by whoever made the film or whoever was authorised by the maker. The shopkeepers are cashing in on someone else's work without providing any profit back to the copyright holders. It is like entering a shop and taking things off the shelf without paying for it. Its called stealing...

i highly doubt the companies who produce these movies even know about the existence of these places selling vhs copies, let alone communicate with them to work out some sort of commission system.

on a related topic, one time i was coming out of futureshop (a major electronics store) and saw some guy standing at the customer service desk trying to return a stack of vcrs; he had at least seven of them. i take a closer look at the man and i realize it's the man who runs the place where i rent my hindi movies.

at the tamil movie store i started going to, they have a nice elaborate shelf system where they have at least 10 vcrs copying dvds to vhs.

Mind u theon! I am talking about Shits called hindi dvds! and companies are Eros International, VS, Spark etc!

There is still a big demand of vhs tapes of these movies, esp new for rental and once the rental craze is over, of course, sold too, may be before too!!

U cant believe whatever is happening in dvd world of hindifilms under the nose and milking extra money at any cost, under the nose of these companies, who had been caught releasing their own titles in advance as pirated!

Now, once u let some body make vhs! out of those dvds, how they deal with it! it is a different question!

If EROS allows me to make 10 copies, officially for a price? just a scenerio!...it is not piracy?

If I make more than ten, or make copy of copy, it is piracy...hmm!!!

It is NOT THAT CLEAN! DAMN IT!!

Would you mind explaining how exactly that is NOT piracy? That's pretty much the very definition of piracy.

Btw, dvds at my local store rent for $2 each (and the store only gives official dvds). I see no purpose for spending twice the price on half the quality (as we know, standard vhs tapes cannot hold anything near dvd quality).

A lot of Indian grocery and video stores provide PAL->NTSC and NTSC->PAL conversion services as well as non-copyrighted video duplications (wedding videos and such) so they must also use them to make copies of videos and DVDs.

It happens at all the Indian VHS rental stores. If the right holders don't know about it, they should. I think, they do.
