funny how quickly things move on.

I was in Lahore last december and there is one street which is just filled with vcd and movie shops (either it's hall road or mall road both are next to each other so I forget the name)

Anyway they have loads of plaza centres there where the main distributors of vcds/dvds are located and you go to buy wholesale large quantities. Videotrack have a main office there. They're in (i think) the Hafiz centre. This street is where you go for playstation2/ x box games aswell btw. They will even modchip you ps2s a service which at that time was very hard to find even in the uk where the chip came from!

The price of vcds per unit was 110/120 rupees for 2/3 disc version, but if you bought about 10 it went to 90 rupees per unit. These were all Indian films as there is no copyright for them in Pakistan, Pakistani vcds were 200 rupees minimum but were always originals.

I asked about dvds and they weren't that common at all, only a few shops sold them, around 500 rupees, sometimes upto 600 rupees each. Took a look at some of them, at that time K3G was in the cinema, the dvd was a fake and had the edges cropped, they didn't have any dvds which were copied from originals so I couldnt check for 1:1 copies. American movie dvds were all over the place, again about 500 rupees, most were cams on dvd and of very low quality.

One shop sold original Indian dvds (he claimed) for about £14 sterling, which wasn't obviously worth it. A cousin of mine claimed original Indian dvds were smuggled through from India and sold in other shops for 150 rupees, but due to the nuclear stand off at that time no supplies had come through.......I never saw any of these at all, so it may have been bs.

Last december I would say out of 100 vcd selling shops I went to in Lahore mainly, only about 10 had dvds for sale.....
most common was "DVD version" where a dvd had been put onto 3 vcds discs, giving better then vcd picture (and near enough dvd quality), but with stereo 2.0 only sound)

....as for piracy, well even the duty free shop in lahore airport was selling pirate vcds of the latest american flicks at about 180 rupees (vanilla sky, lord of the rings, ali etc)

Hall Rd.

Btw ... I was down in Lahore back in April and got the Starwars trilogy on DVD from there for 600 rupees total not each. They were laser disc rips in OAR. Other DVDs like The Crow (Lee), Indiana Jones:TOD and some others were 150 rupees each. This was not from Hall Rd. but from a Stadium which had McDonalds next to it.

Hafiz Centre, Hall Road, Rainbow Centre and Raja Bazaar - Mughal Sera all are the main piracy capital of the world.. these geezers actually import the replicas from china and distribute them around the world!! Oh well at least i know where to shop now!! Theres always someone coming to and from pakistan from the family, so i know where to spend my money :) I went pakistan about 4 years ago and purchased Kareeb Eros/DEI copy from Rawalpindi Sadar, the only place i knew of that sold original DVDs and i paid 2000 pak rupees (abt £24)... just shows how things have changed!!

The only problem you might get with customs is going out of Lahore airport, they are the biggest chors in the universe. Last time I came back I had 150 VCDs in my bag and when the customs bloke said how many CDs I had in my bag I said 'around about 10-20'. So he only goes in and finds my stash, then tells me I've got to get shot of the lot which is by the way absolute bullshit, but you don't feel like arguing at that point with an official who could make your life very difficult, so I suggested myself paying some custom duty. Well that was paid behind a pillar and went straight into his pocket!! Ihave no problems going out of Islamabad or Karachi, but Lahore, they take the biscuit those guys.

hey faddy a couple of questions.......

1) are the dvds authored by some pakistani company?
ie video track or do they say (say) eros? (even though they are fake)

2) do they have their logos running in the films in the top right hand corner? (videotrack do on all songs)

3) what cases do they come in? cardboard? or proper amray type with normal/alternate(fake) covers?

2in1s are more than likely made by Vision

2in1s have the Vision logo, on some DVDs transparent and some some solid.

The older 2in1s were in cardboard but the newer ones come in proper amaray covers.

Ive only flown out of Lahore once, and ive promised myself i will never ever do that again!! :) Islamabad is my departing city!! So i is cool, and my cousin is one of the PIA assistants, so its even better!!

As for the DVDs, majority are replicated fromt the real deal so they have Eros on it, and then a logo for whoever may have distributed it locally, i.e. Chacha Jee Video!! and then on the DVD, they normally have the real opening logo sequence, like eros and then it moves over to the dodgy pirate logo!! :) But like Urbanlegend said the 2 in 1s are done by some company!! dont know who!!

That's Fortress Stadium, if my memory serves me...

THATS IT! There were alot of cheap retailers down there...with prices for DVDs ranging from 100 rupees to 500 rupees. Strangely, I saw of alot of white folk down there buying DVDs as well ???
