Dear all,

I wrote to Columbia regarding the possibility of producing devdas on dvd as a decent format:

My letter:

'Thank you first of all for your service, which provides much
entertainment and joy. I would like to request or bring to your
attention, an area which you ventured into however have not fully put into place yet, and that is Bollywood movies on DVD.

There are many superb Bollywood movies released, however except for a few manufactures Dei, Eros, Soundvision have not fully integrated itself into the mainstream in UK or USA under known names like youself. Unfortunately to
date the only DVD manufacturer of Indian movies have have produced a fairly decent quality DVD is DEI and they are relatively hit and miss;whereas EROS unfortunately seem to have the majority (usually poor in picture and audio quality).
Your DVD Laagaan was a God-send in an environment of substantially inferior DVDs and I am writing to request that you hopefully produce some more. Another recently released movie DEVDAS has been not only reviewed in the
newspapers here widely but has been nominated for OSCARS - it at the moment has been released in the US by EROS - much to the disappointment to many as is a poor quality disc - there would be 10,000s worldwide which would be greatful if you manufactured a release of this movie and many that have already purchased the EROS version that would rebuy it if
a decent quality version was released. There are 2 versions of the film released the original is a 3 hour cut, unlike the 2.5 cut in uk. The longer would be preferable; even without extras a decent dd5:1 or DTS soudntrack (most of the movies are in ddex or dts for theatrical release) and decent picture, retaining the colour vibrancy and picture would be do extremely well - though probably due to length have to be
spread over 2 discs. I highly recommend such a venture and suggest if you take my suggestion seriously that you post a poll on your website to assess what the interest would be in such a movie/ movies in the future............

Their Reply:

Thank you so much for taking the time to contact us with your thoughts on Bollywood DVDs - it's an area we are already looking into although I'm not aware of any specific films being scheduled yet.

Your idea of an online poll to gauge interest is a good one which we will recommend to the planning team.

Thanks again for your email and if we have any news in the future on this we'll be sure to let you know.

Kindest regards,

The CTHE Team

So guys, although a tentative step not a complete set back. So everyone out there please get on your skates and send similar letters to Columbia/ Tristar. The more we email them and send messages to them, the more chance we have in them taking the step to decent dvds for us all...........

Good luck everyone

Well lots of looks here but no replies,
Maybe we should start something - if anyone sends an email to columbia/tristar, as I have done - the email address is in the first post of the topic - please let the others know by posting here your name if nothing else and maybe your reply from Columbia.
There is no point any of us moaning if noone is willing to take a step to change the current situation - noone after all is gong to stop buying dvds even if crap!

I will definitely be writing to them though not about Devdas but rather other future releases that deserve CT dvd. Anyway
djinnuk, I don't intend to nitpick but Devdas has not been nominated for the Oscars.

i e-mailed them aany here's the reply...

several people have contacted us regarding bringing more
Bollywood movies to DVD. We have put the suggestion to our planning
team for them to follow up, and it certainly seems a worthwhile idea to
us!

We will forward your suggestion on Devdas, however usually if one
distributor has already released it, it will be difficult to obtain the
rights to re-release it, unless the first distributor did not have the
rights in the first place and you viewed a pirate copy. Often this will
account for the poor quality as the pirate copy will not have been made
from the original studio master.

If we have any further news we will email you again.

Kind regards,

The CTHE team

Unfortunately, the rightholders couldn't produce a decent DVD. Columbia must not be familiar with the situation in Indian DVDs where the rightholders, even if they're huge companies like Eros and YRF, put no effort into creating a decent DVD.

With a name like Bharat Shah behind almost every big film, its going to be hard for us to receive any kind of proper authorized DVD.
