Got a reply from SHOWCASE.

"Thank you for your message and your interest in Showcase.

The format we received the movie Asoka in was the 169 minute version that was released theatrically. We received an NTSC beta tape - whether it came from a PAL or Film source we can't be sure.

Once again, thank you for your message.

Sincerely,

Viewer Relations
Showcase "

We know that PAL ASOKA is 169 min and runs 4% faster. As NTSC DVD was made from PAL material, the 4% faster speed was retained and that too is 169 min.
So, the NTSC Beta tape that Showcase received seems to be a Film to PAL to NTSC Beta Tape.

Too bad.

Rana

Sorry I did not watch it, except a glimpse or two. Don't really know what the changes are other than the fact there are additional scenes.

Asoka on SHOWCASE! wow. That's pretty big, considering the popularity of the channel. BTW Rana, do you know what time and day Ray's Patthar Panchali is coming this month on TV?

Despite the name "SHOWCASE", they still are getting only a Beta NTSC tape which itself is a Film to PAL to NTSC transfer. It'll be interesting to see what we get. It's 169 min feature time in 214 min slot. I don't think it's "Showcase Review". So, there will be no introductory or ending comments.

Pather Panchali is on TFO at 9 PM, Dec 27. Usually it repeats the next day around midnight.

BTW, have you seen Mani Kaul's Annu Aggarwal starrer "The Cloud Door" (50 min) on Shocase. It is shown every now and then.

Thanks for the info. Rana. But I think they just might have an introductory and post-screening comments for Asoka, considering that its being aired prime time hours.

Regarding this, yes I've seen it a few times around. The locations shown of India in the film seem very exotic and Annu Aggarwal doing such films goes to show where actresses end up when they can't find a safe place in Bollywood films, they give up to soft-core blue movies. Mamta Kulkarni is another example.

Arsh, the common point is SHOCASE TV.

DVD Collector, keeping in mind that CLOUD DOOR was produced for an international feature series, the Cloud Door segment was well done. I wouldn't call it a blue movie. Just somewhat adult. It's not vulgar as many "suitable for all" Indian films are. I agree with you about the exotic locales. Excellent Cinematography.

I don't think this movie was ever released in India.

Try play.com

It's usually a good price from there!

It's £5.99 for the Asoka DVD metrodome (region 0) from HMV in the UK (Sale price £3.99) - it's now a budget DVD. If you buy it from an Indian store in the UK you have to pay from £15 to £20.
