What new Indian DVDs have you bought, and how satisfied were you with them?

Mine are :

1. 'Aradhana' by EVP : Nice DVD for the price, but subtitles left a lot to be desired.

2. '12B' by Ayngaran : I bought this one just because an old school friend starred in it. Its a remake of 'Sliding Doors' and I am wishing I hadn't spent 20 bucks on it.

3. 'Khoobsurat' by DEI : Excellent DVD and movie. Its amazing how DEI could make even the worst quality film look like award winning material. The bit rate is high and the transfer is immaculate.

4. 'Umrao Jaan' by DEI : Another superb DEI DVD, this one is going for as little as $5.99 on many online stores. Definitely worth investing in. Another pristine transfer from DEI.

Which ones did you get?

in the last few weeks i bought Ajnabee [eros] & Sangharsh [weg] i already spoke about these on the other forum but in general both were sh*t dvd's. not a single decent thing worth mentioning about them.

right now i am awaiting my second copy of Dil Vil Pyar Vyar(Spark) had a few problems with the first one, but IW has been kind enough & agreed to send me a second copy without charging me anything futher.

So, you did get the sub-titled version. Is the version you got, one of the ones described in Aradhana thread??

Somehow, I managed to get EVP ARADHANA without sub-titles (thanks to our zulmi friend DragunR2). Mine is Progressive and as normal for EVP DVDs, I think your subtitled version is interlaced. Could you please check it out and also check the Aradhana thread??

Rana

P.S.
If Sub-titles are a must, even interlaced version of EVP ARADHANA is much better than any current releases from other labels. Prog is better, but in case of EVP DVDs, there are no sub-titles.

Rana, hee hee. I am listening to Mandakini's song 'Naazuk naazuk mera badan, choona na' while writing this. Its about all I can do from cracking up with laughter!

Yes, no one realized that the EVP new version of 'Aradhana' shares NOTHING IN COMMON with either DVD mentioned in the Aradhana thread. This is obviously a NEW BATCH with a COMPLETELY different cover and look. I dont know how to tell progressive from interlaced though - I'm still learning DVD jargon, pardon me! All I know is that the picture retains very good quality when you zoom in X2, X4 and even X8 (though some disintegration is there). The worst part are the subtitles - bad grammar and awful timing. I hated this aspect of the DVD. I watched it with a non-Hindi speaker and no wonder they tuned out. It gave me a headache too.

There is also a song audio and song video option. The menu background is just a shot of the rippling waves upon the lake. The song menu has been very badly designed as it shows you scenes from other parts of the movie with 'Song 1', 'Song 2' written on each scene, even though the scene has nothing to do with the song! Shocking. And each time you want to go back to the main menu, and you press the 'Menu' button, the DVD stops. When you press play again, it starts from the very beginning with Sai Baba's face and EVP ads and you cannot even fast forward this. On the whole I am happy about the print quality and sound, but not the design, look and feel of the DVD.

Kabir I gave you the information as to you you can check (from ur computer) whether your DVD is indeed progressive or interlaced !

Faddy, I tend to agree with you to a certain extent. It really irritates me to know that my hard earned money is going to some useless morons at Eros who do a horrible job. To be honest, I prefer shopping at pakwebstore and giving my two cents to them as they have some really novel ideas even though it is indeed piracy - even though it may not be construed as such, as we are buying a Pakistani product which arent governed by laws either way in the US or UK. Ideas like a 'Chandni/Lamhe' and 'Silsila/Kabhi Kabhi' combo DVD are things that people are looking forward to. I do not support all piracy, of course. But when piracy gets creative, it also gets very interesting. What can one say?

My last purchase was Pyaasa/Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai 2in1 from pakwebstore.com. Both taken from the Spark originals. YKHRH had some funny moments here and there (Bunty's the best character), and great music. Pyaasa was a one-time watch for me, with a few decent songs. PQ was average for both movies, and sound was good on YKHRH, but Pyasa sound was quite nice.

I received Chupke Chupke and Koshish (both DEI) from IW as a trade for the Aradhana discs for Sknath and Rana, and they're both pretty good quality. The noise reduction is a little annoying, but that is a minor quibble considering how good the quality overall is.

Kabir, you didn't like 12B? I thought it was a good movie. Even though it was a remake of Sliding Doors, it was definitely an original idea for an Indian film. Maybe there'll be a remake of Memento someday...

Just bought Devdas last week from IW. If not for the sound I would never have bought it.

Dragun, to be honest the only reason I even bought 12B was because Shamsudin (aka Shaam) is my childhood friend and I wanted to support his work. I thought it was alright but I didnt like the voice they used for Shaam. His own voice is very very squeaky which is why they dubbed it. It was quite strange to watch. The movie was a flop in Tamil Nadu though. I did like the parts with Simran as shes soooooooo gorgeous. The songs are nice. Many people were confused by this movie, by the way, as the ending is very different from Sliding Doors. Did you notice where they goofed up? Sliding Doors gave us the possibility of Parallel Universes, but this movie actually negated it in the climax.
