Mandakini, who gained fame once by baring her breasts while splashing around under a waterfall in 'Ram Teri Ganga Maili' is now making a return. After a series of failed comeback attempts - her last big return to the screen was a bloated appearance in 1988's 'Tezaab' which was Madhuri Dixit's breakthrough vehicle instead - the 'actress' has decided to cut a second solo album. The last one 'No Vacancy' was inspired by Bappi Lahiri, for whom Mandakini had sung in the flop 'Dancing City'. 'No Vacancy' made some sort of impact in India as it was certified a hit (by her record company), and the songs are now being re-released. Mandakini has meanwhile been reportedly married and divorced from mafia good Dawood Ibrahim, and is currently wed to his brother Anees, with whom she resides in Bangalore.
News report from Indian Express :
Mandakini croons back into Mumbai Deepak Karambelkar -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Adding weight to the theory that when one door closes, another opens, is Mandakini. She may have been consigned to the dusty archives of Bollywood by industry moghuls and audiences alike, but the former actress who shot to fame in Raj Kapoor's Ram Teri Ganga Maili in 1985 has returned. Joining the list of ex-stars who seek solace in music, Mandakini is launching an album No Vacancy, whose theme, predictably enough, is love. The album contains eight songs, which a press release insists are "divine alchemy". Added Mandakini: ``They are situational songs and have a story to tell."
Mandakini's previous stint with music was 12 years ago, when she sung for Bappi Lahri's album Dancing City. ``I have a background in singing, so I decided to capture the pulse of the youth," she said. Mandakini's only claim to fame proved to be Ram Teri..., and the rest of her ventures bombed miserably. But rather than fading away, she moved into notoriety as rumours of her connections with theunderworld abounded. She finally sought refuge in Bangalore.
Today, after six years of hibernation, she has returned with No Vacancy, produced by Rajeev Chaubey. The music will be released in mid-June, along with two videos. Claimed Chaubey, ``Mandakini has the best voice in the industry. Her voice has immense range and is that of a proper singer's.'' The title, he informed, comes from the change in boy-girl equations, ``Previously, girls would follow boys, now it is the other way round!''
'No Vacancy', originally a mediocre success in 1999, is now being re-released with bonus tracks, and devotional Tibetan songs sung by Mandakini. Mandakini accompanied by Kargyu Rimpoche visited the Asian Academy of Film and Television recently. Rimpoche said he would be launching his film “The Power of Compassion†early next year and Mandakini would sing the entire soundtrack. "Hers is the voice of the Devi" said Rimpoche. Mandakini plans to tour following the success of her album ---------------------------
