Even as Mumbai is reeling from the impact of the bomb hoaxes, financier Bharat Shah, producer Raju Patel and director Ram Gopal Varma are working on India's costliest film Bomb, tentatively budgeted over Rs 80 crore.

Though Varma denies that the title of the film is Bomb, Raju Patel asserts that the name is Bomb.

The film stars Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan and Amitabh Bachchan besides a few others including some Hollywood actors.

Says Raju Patel, I am still talking to Varma about a few details.

The budget may even go up to Rs 90 crore. But I need to see the script first. I should be getting the mutually agreed script from Varma by the end of January.

Then we shall work on the casting. Even Varma is coming down to the US to finalise the cast after that, says Patel.

Patel, who has funded a portion of Kaante, is also funding Nagesh Kukunoor crossover film titled Tandoor.

Amitabh Bachchan plays a cook in the film who falls in love with an American woman. We are still finalising the American actress.

That should be done by the end of this month, says Patel who looks after creative development of the film including finalisation of scripts, the talent pool and the actors, among other things.

In Hollywood, we dont just act as money banks putting money into films. We have a creative co-involvement in the project, like the director.

After Kaante, Bomb and Tandoor are good enough work for the next two years, says Patel who is still on the lookout for a director for his film Hanuman.

The name of Ram Gopal Varma's Rs 650 million project with film financier Bharat Shah, featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan and Akshay Kumar, is Ek.

The director said this in response to recent reports that quoted the film's international producer Raju Patel as saying the name of the film is Bomb. Patel is also the international producer of Sanjay Gupta's Kaante.

Asserts Varma, "My film is certainly not called Bomb. Please! That title was used tentatively when we were initially discussing the project. I don't know how Raju Patel was quoted calling the film Bomb. The title is Ek as in the numerical 1. And it is not negotiable."

Varma is now busy scripting for Ek, the shooting for which begins in July.

He will also start another film with Ajay Devgan in February, he announces from the sets of Bhoot where he is shooting with Rekha. He adds, "It is a murder mystery and will be produced by Ajay. I have called it Murder At Srikrishna Building."

Varma is known for his penchant for unusual titles. Who else could have titled his film Road, Company or Jungle?

"In comparison, Murder At Srikrishna Building sounds quite normal, no?" chuckles Varma as he sets up his next shot.

After Company and the forthcoming Bhoot this is the third film Varma will direct with Ajay Devgan in the lead. Ek marks the first time Varma has worked with another actor, apart from Manoj Bajpai, in four major films.

There is a great deal of mutual admiration between Varma and Devgan. Says the former, "Look at the variety of roles and performances in 2002, from Company to The Legend Of Bhagat Singh to Deewangee! Unlike other stars, he does not tomtom his achievements. Ajay is one of the most underrated actors we have."

In Bollywood, big still rules the roost

Although trade analysts remain skeptical about just how successful the film actually was, its success can hardly be discounted. And, as if to prove that one big-budget film deserves another, Shah is now putting his money where his mouth is. The diamond merchant and film financier has now launched off on an even bigger project, which is already being estimated to cost above Rs 65 crore! The film - to reportedly star Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan and Nana Patekar - will be launched in April and will also have a Hollywood actress in the cast, apart from an all American crew. It is supposedly 'inspired' by Hollywood hit McKenna's Gold, though director Ram Gopal Verma is not about to admit it easily.

I hate this trend. Who are they trying to impress with those huge budgets? I think 50 crores is a waste of money for the film Devdas. While the film is good, I dont see why they need to spend so much money. And unfortunately most people who saw the film seem to talk about the costumes and the sets and not about how the film was handled or acted.

I think that was the point of spending so much money on Devdas. There wasn't much below all the glitter and spectacle. But if you give an above average director like RGV so much money, he'll probably do something interesting with it. Still, for all this money that is going to be spent on Ek, Bharat Shah will most likely sell the DVD rights to Eros, leaving us with a crappy DVD that will make the film look like it cost 80 rupees, not 80 crore.
