first of all all you chill out..

sumit, stop your childish comments at asif..

compare ur situatuion with mine: i'm not a crorepati here, whos got a zillion dollar systtem. i got a decent tv, with a decent pioneer dvd player. i use the same set of two speakers for my computer, sound system, and my tv..

what i have is actually MORE than most of our desi bhais.that's why they don't care about quality, and so companies don't care!..you guys are serisouly cracked if u spend thousands on ur state of the art systems, or else you got massive hookups..(and if u do, then plz send a bit of cash this way :) )..

anyways, my point being this: indian dvd companies CAN NOT make proper dvds, that's the FACT!

if they can't make proper interlaced dvds, why the hell do u expect them to make progressive dvds...
- to satisfy a MINORITY???

let them make a state of the art interlaced dvd...then let them start doing it regularly..then complain!

My My someone is really angry :D Not that it bothers me but jus to set the record straight dograK.. you have identified yourself very correctly when you stated

I surely wouldnt wanna be in ur category of "desi-bhai's" (who have a knack of accepting useless dvds with such cavalier comments as " we deserve what we get" ) would I ? It would be an insult to my trade (which is Video coding and Compression)... Now to set something straight

I too have a decent TV (27" TV.. Interlaced, A JVC progressive scan DVD player which , the last time I saw, you can get for less than 300 Bucks Canadian $ and hell man I am not even working like you am I ? :D ) .. I dont have any speaker or sound system... like you do and I enjoy my stuff on my 2 channel Computer speakers.. or from my TV..or even from my JVC wireless headsets...
Yet you might be wondering why i am a proponent of a "high end stuff "... Thats cos for me quality is more important that for the sake of buying it ( even though it may be garbage.. I wonder how can someone be a Critiqué of DVds when they actively support Garbage stuff like this Devdas DVD. I know I am not and hence I have taken this stance. You are afterall free to take your own stance :) .. I would rather have a single disc with the movie in it rather than bother abt other trivial stuff like documentaries or menu design etc etc :D (Does that make sense ?)
As for my ( or others ) remarks aganist some members and their posts , I stand by them... . I dont feel it is appropriate to comment abt stuff one is unaware of. It is better to get an understanding of the facts before someone makes a comment abt them. You are a (relatively) new member here and it would be better for you to go thorugh the posts and find out why they ( the comments) were made against him, before you shoot of your mouth in haste :)

Again a point here :-

There was a company not so long ago called DEI..... (does that remind you of a previous post of mine or maybe you should go and check that out..and yeah they did make real progressive DVDs... and when ppl bought them.. i am sure they would have enjoyed them ... Do make it a point to refer to the numerous reviews of the dvds authored by DEI ( a desi-bhai company..producing DVds for "poor" desi-bhai's like us ) :D :D

I'd just like to know one thing from arsh or whomever already has the original Devdas DVD. It is safe to say that we should stick to our pirated version of this film on DVD for the sake of a decent DVD treatement? Or are they also no different from this Eros newly release?

Arsh miyan / Ali or anyone here ... just a hypothetical situation... I am pretty much sure that some prints of Devdas should be floating around somewhere... Now would it be possible for someone to make a SUPERIOR alternative version for this dvd (and since this cant be done legally it has to be done stealthily)...
I remember having seen the restoration work done for Hitchcock's VERTIGO... It was amazing work indeed. Devdas doesnt such a treatment and all it needs is someone (enthusiastic enuff) to grab a copy of the film for a few days and do the transfer process and the rest becomes childs play. What would it take to make that happen ?

As for me.. I dont think I will end up buying this DVd neither will I buy the REPLICATED / PIRATED stuff from the "shady" stores floating around here. As Punjabimunda has stated previously, I would go for the DVD @ IW when it is selling for $2.99 - $4.99 cos thats what is the true price for the DVD ( The price of the booklet, Gold media for the disc and the cover design...:D ) nothing more !

I thought the pirated DVD of Devdas was pretty decent ???
Anyhow, does the full feature of Eros have the alternative ending also does it have a longer duration with the addtional(unseen) scenes added in, which the pirated versions didn't have?

my dear sumit.

while i may be relatively new, you are forgetting what i am saying.

what is the use of crying over spilt milk? what is the use of bemoaning the fact that there once was a company called DEi that did great dvds. unfortunately, DEi is bankrupt. unfortunately, Devdas was always going to be made by Eros, since Bharat Shah owned its rights and would obviously sell to a company he has a stake in.

anyways, whats done is done. i fail to see why we should go around complaining about the quality. frankly, i kept hope that eros would do a good job of the dvd, but in the back of my mind, i knew it wouldn't. so did everyone. including you.

i know very well that you take an interest in dvds, and their technicalities. good for you. but you must realize that every one of us does not. we are far more interested in enjoyable fare which gives us a break from our hectic lives. not many of us care that there are two images seen when it is paused. face it: there is not a big audience for south asian dvds' especially when you compare to hollywood. we cannot expect to receive the hollywood dvd treatment when we are in such a minority.

however, on the other hand, we cannot and should not expect to recieve inferior treatment from a company that knows how to do a good dvd. that is why i would instead advocate that you channel your energies elsewhere; perhaps you should start a petition. perhaps you should go down to nasa and put up the petition there, and make people sign it. believe me, if you did so, i would be the first to sign!

however, bitching at people who believe that a product is made up of not only video but also the extras is immature.

i hope you understand.

There you go Dogra again... You seem to have resigned to the fact that

Isnt that a rather defeatist attitude ? We have some members here who are not desis in any way ... I can name a Few.. PagalChand, JeffAdkins etc.. ( forgive me if i have missed out others)... Our goal should be to encourage more ppl to watch Hindi DVDs and whne the wankas @ EROS realize that then they can get some idea as to what we are talking here.
The P****S @ EROS have the same mentality which someone here made a mention of..."the asian mentality".. unless someone from the "other" race start criticizing them, they wont bother to take any action...

Well put it this way....

Doodh aur DVDs mein shaayad yehi fark hai ... (and nah i aint starting a film called Sholay - Part 2 (The DVd authoring experience :D)...

Isnt this quite the contrary of what DEVDAS the film tried to achieve ?.. Devdas tried to acheive a proper North American release to showcase Indian Heritage.. This was targetted towards the Non-desi populace.. Now in the same vein, they should have put in that EXTRA effort to target the home video market also which forms a major chunk of a movie's business here in North America.

I never claimed to be speaking for the majority here (cos they still do not want a change).. My comments and views are directed towards the rank minority who (IMO) have started taking an objective look at these DVDs...

Think of this scenario...If you had a Non-Desi friend and you wanted to invite him/her to watch an Indian film would you show him/her DEVDAS ...what if he/she happens to be an avid Hollywood DVD watcher and what if he/she makes the comment "is this how Indian DVds are produced ? "..what will u reply ?...

Boond Boond se sagar Banta hai (Many drops make an ocean)

I remember this forum was to educate our "desi" folks abt DVds and their quality and I am happy that I have been able to play my part ..(that being the technical aspects and finer points..). I leave it to others here to educate ppl abt the other aspects like acting and such stuff.... I am afterall not a Film Critic you see :D

Hope that helps and nothing personal :)

Its a waste of time voicing your stongly felt opinons here, why not just phone EROS or even Trading Standards (Report it to where EROS is based in the UK)??

I have just got my DVD and I found the DVD similar in quality to thier other recent releases so I wasn't surprised. Have to adimt the packaging was quite kool, shame the content was crap in quality. I have already phoned EROS about this and just told them it was a crap DVD.

Sunny Not to sound churlish but did you use the exact same words ? I wonder what will be the use of calling them up ? Do they even bother to take ppl's phone calls ? or for that matter suggestions ? Havent you been trying to do that since last year ? The result .. the quality has gone down the drain :)

The only solution, as ppl have suggested here, pirate/replicate this DVD extensively such that their business suffers or purchase the dvds at dirt cheap rates cos thats what they deserve...

One more question here....
Are you aware of any Organization that is responsible for ensuring DVD standards (after all the logo DVD is a trademark like the Dolby Double D ) ? .. You metioned something abt Trade standards..what is that ?....

Lastly... Isnt Ayngaran also in the same league ? When are they switching over to properly encoding their DVDs... ?

Will be awaiting your response...
Cheerz

When progressive scan content that originates from film is stored on a DVD disc it can be called a 480P(24) title, which means that the MPEG-2 video has been encoded as 480 line progressive scan material, with a frame rate of 24 frames per second.

On progressive DVDs, each frame of the 24 frames per second is stored as two fields, right? But the above quote implies that each frame is stored as a whole frame.

It clearly states earlier on that each frame (film) is recorded as a whole frame in 2 (video) fields.

Should answer your question !

Let me get something straight:

480p(30) is ONLY for DVDs of 30fps video and film sources (such as some Todd-AO films) and 480p is for all 24fps film/video sources (such as DEI's DVDs and Star Wars Episode II). Correct? Or are the 6 extra frames sometimes added to 24fps sourced-DVDs?

and the site says,

Properly flagged DVDs don't need to record these extra 6 film frames.

Also note the example of 480p (30) progressive video:
DEI logos (Extremly dynamic Lightening) have 30 distinct frames per sec and there is no combing or double images in force weave or whatever.
