Could some one please clarify/ confirm the Audio Format for K3G Theatrical screenings ??

They are showing K3G in a local theatre this weekend. It is being advertised as having Dolby Digital Sound although the theatre has DTS sound instead (Theatre doesn't have Dolby Digital sound). I wonder if the movie has DTS audio ?? Do the exhibitors have to order DTS CD by paying extra ??.

If DTS CD is not available or not playable, what audio will we get in a theatre which doesn't have Dolby Digital ??

Thanks.

Rana

K3G like almost all top movies in India has been released with both Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks. So unless the theater guys are stupid and use a Dolby Digital print in a DTS theater, you should be able to watch the movie with Digital sound. Albeit, this will only be 5.1 sound since no Hindi movie has yet to be encoded with Dolby Digital EX6.1 or DTS ES6.1.
No charge has to be paid seperately for the DTS CD. Basically the distributor provides the appropriate print with or without cd depending on the theater's needs.

PS: I have at times seen some theaters show a Dolby Digital print in a DTS only theater. In which case it is the Dolby SR track that was used to screen the film.

Most Hindi films- nearly all actually- are both in DD and DTS, Rana. And a big film like K3G will probably try to get more DTS prints worldwide than the last big film.

Sanjay, there are already three Hindi films that are in Dolby Digital EX 6.1. Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar, Dillagi, Indian. Unfortunately only Indian is available in 6.1 on dvd by Eros!!! Still waiting for DTS ES though.

No offense but I seriously doubt your info regarding Hindi movies, specially the mentioned titles and DD EX6.1

And as for Indian and it having 6.1 sound on the Eros DVD is concerned, I again have very serious doubts. I don't remember my Reciever showing the DD EX6.1 flag. Unfortunately like most of my Hindi DVDs bought over the last 4 - 6 months it no longer works and therefore I cannot verify it. By the way I hope you do know that Dolby Digital EX is not a true 6.1 technology. There are only 5.1 discreet tracks encoded, the 6th rear center channel is derived from a matrix signal encoded in the two rear discreet channels (Similar to the center channel in Dolby Pro Logic). DTS ES on the other hand does have discreet 6.1 channels. But that is not always the case, since at times it is discreet 5.1 + matrixed 6th channel similar to Dolby Digital EX

PS: As far as I can remember the Indian Eros DVD had pretty average (meaning poor as usual for Eros) sound.

I'm a projectionist, who made up 3 copies of the film. When the film came in it claimed to have a DTS soundtrack but no additional disk arrived. So we are playing the film in EX in our digital screens

Hi sanjay, I understand how DD EX works and I know that DD 6.1 is not exactly correct as compared to DTS ES, no offence but I used to eat, sleep and live DTS, DD and SDDS. I still do actually. Also I have never watched the film Indian let alone review the dvd so I have no idea how these three films sound in theater or on dvd. I was merely reporting that there is a 6.1 dvd by Eros, how true it is I don't know.

So I understand K3G is in Dolby Digital EX? BTW your theater should report DTS India that you did not receive the DTS disc at all. Unless your theater did not request the disc in the first place.

Hi congress,
I guess when Eros says 6.1 it must be 6.1, right? NAAAAA.... :D Yaar when they cannot even get their 5.1 right do you really expect them to actually encode 6.1, something which is quite rare on even hollywood DVDs. Actually I could bet Eros has not even heard of Dolby Digital EX or DTS ES :)

Thanks everyone for the useful audio info.
With ref to K3G screening at the local theatre, the theatre has no idea, what sound format it will be. The only thing they could tell me was that the theatre has been rented for the weekend. The only hope is if every print has Dolby Digital, Dolby SR for back up and additional DTS CD for DTS theatres. Is it possible that same print has both DD and DTS sync ??

Another irritant is that usually the audience at small centres likes top audio level to be around 85 dB (at times, I have taken Radi Shack/ Tandy dB meter with me) where as I like it to be Director intended 115 dB.

I'd just like to clarify Congress's point about the 3 films in Dolby Digital EX. The films "Dil Me Mat Le Yaar", "Dillagi", and "Indian" were all officially released as Dolby EX films. You can see that in the end credits of those films. But it should be noted that aesthetic quality is not inherent in a format. Sunny Deol owns the company Sunny Super Sound - so he probably gets access to equipment and the right to use the Dolby EX logo easily. Can anyone confirm whether K3G is in Dolby EX - because it doesn't carry the logo.

K3G was screened in a local DTS equipped theatre, this weekend. The audio was not from a DTS disc and as the theatre doesn’t have Dolby Digital, I am sure backup audio track was used. The sound was good, but only MONO. I did not feel the stereo or surround effects. CD in my car stereo sounds better and has more base. I wish exhibitors order prints compatible with the theatres. It doesn’t cost any extra, as Sanjay mentioned earlier in this thread, except for a few minutes of time.

At the end of the Film, the credits had both, Dolby Digital (No DD Ex) and DTS logos.

Both shows went almost House Full. As far as the movie, there is no comparison between K3G and Asoka. I prefer Asoka any time. Because of the hype, K3G is more successful now, but in the long run, people will remember Asoka and not K3G. Who can stand Kareena’s absurd character? Why would any one have a nick name Poo (dog shit)??. Poo is good for name calling, not for a nick name.

Remember, Mera Naam Joker (flop) and Johny Mera Naam (super hit).

Both Asoka and K3G used ADR and the in thing in 2001 was location sound also known as synch sound. Though Asoka was much better than K3G, it sure can't beat Lagaan.
