One of my favorite candyfloss Tamil films is "Kadhalikka Neramillai." It it a pure comedy musical with no serious scenes or themes. Ayngaran's DVD has subtitles, but some of the comedy relies on the original dialogue and may not be quite as funny to a non-Tamil speaker. Give it a try, though, as it is very funny and the songs are good.

I'd also recommend the following:

12B
Thiruvilayadal (a well-made mythological film)

Nenjil Ore Aalayam (remade in Hindi as Dil Ek Mandir, with Rajendra Kumar, I believe. Directed by Sridhar, but this is a pretty melodramatic film. Great cinematography and songs. Tearjerker. Where's the DVD?)

Navarathiri (amazing Shivaji Ganesan plays nine roles)
Ethir Neechal (K. Balachandar's directorial debut, I believe. Comedy/drama that takes place mostly within one house.)
Oru Thalai Raagam (not on DVD as far as I know)
Arangetram (also remade into a Hindi version, but it wasn't as good)

For a newbie like yourself I suggest you watch the following films so you get a proper understanding of Tamil cinema and its melodrama...Sadly you won't find any YR type fluff as Tamil cinema in general has grown way passed that due to a more anticipated audience expectations on each new relases.

Naanda (2001) = A wonderful low budget film with a fantastic screenplay and fine performances. The story looks at a violent son pinning for his mother's love.

This controversial film features a scene of a son pushing the mother violently onto the ground, something that the censors had a tough time passing due to the way mothers are generally protrayed on Indian cinema = almost godlike characters. Also another scene of a rapist being castrated by the hero as punishment was strangly passed by censors in India, but was cut from the UK, Singapore and Malaysian Prints. The DVD also cuts this scene out for a lower classification.

Kanathil Muthamittal (2001) = Mani Ratnam's latest direction about the conflict in Sri Lanka. Has some beautiful moments of melodrama that you move you in tears.

Kasi (2001) = A rural story about a blind man who faces verbal abuse from his loud mouth father and love from his younger sister and deaf girlfirend...and an ending that is prehaps one of the best ever seen on an Indian film.

Varusumellam Vasantham (2002) = A warm hearted comedy film about a boy and his grandfather. The film is a typical Tamil masala film yet it shows just how much development and effort is placed in the screenplay to make audiences feel for the characters.

These are just a handful selection of recent releases that might fit your bill. All are avalible on DVD from Ayngaran International and each have English Subtitles.

Nayagan (1987) - this film is quite possibly Kamala Hassan best performance, film critic David Chute believes Hassan's performance in Nayagan should easily be compared to what DeNiro and Brando did in the Godfather saga.

I hear that Kasi is rather dire throughout. Is this true?

Kasi is one of the most depressing films I have seen.........but it is strangely captivating, and I had to watch the movie until the end, even though yo kinda know whats going to happen.........but when it takes place, it really takes you by surprise!

Hope I haven't given anything away!

This is one film that deserves to be re-made into a Hindi film, there was even rumours on Aamir Khan being intrested after he saw the film. He would fit the role Kasi to a tee!!!

I'd also recommend "Run," starring Madhavan.
